This really puzzles me. The directions are obscure.
It seems difficult and I'm getting nowhere. Any help would be appreciated.

It is remarkable easy Audrey. You have 12 tableau piles. You build down on those by alternate colour. If you clear a column you can put any available card into it. With a little care you can frequently tidy up a few columns at the same time. The aces go on the foundations as usual but you build up by alternate colour and not by suit. When there are no available moves you just click on the stock and see if the next card is playable. Click on automove at any time and it will play available cards for you. Game #1 is winnable.
