Help again, Richard. This is the first time I'm attempting to solve a problem game and I have no idea how to read your solution. Is there a help file that explains these steps? Chalk it up to being a senior citizen!!!!! E.

Firstly right click on the solution and select "Save link as". Then download it to your desktop or somewhere you can find it easily. Don't bother opening it. Depending on what you are running you may get a slightly different option. You need to download it anyway.
Please let me know if you can do that and then we'll move to the second phase.

If it has a .txt extension you can rename it, removing the .txt bit and making it .pgs instead

I can't save it like you said. As soon as I right click on your link the opened solution appears, and when I "save as" through the top menu bar it saves with a file extension. P.S. I'm on a Mac.

Just change the file extension to .pgs after you download it.

Elaine, I find it easier the way I do it. I right click on the solution. When the page comes up I then left click on the http address bar. A list will appear, choose copy, open up your game, choose open game under the file heading, when that appears, left click and hit paste in the file name box, and the solution then goes to work. I hope no one objects to the different way I do it, but once you do it, it's much easier in my opinion. Hope this doesn't confuse you.

Thanks to one and all. I opened the video but is there a way to slow down the plays?
I couldn't, however, implement Kathy's way of doing it. I used to be a Windows+mouse lady for years. Now, right- and left-clicks aren't easy for me to figure out on my new Mac + trackpad so I'm going to get a computer-savvy friend to show me how to do it.
Thanks again to all of you. E.

Elaine, I didn't realize you had a MAC, so I don't know whether the way I do it will work. But I wanted to let you know because I think it's a much easier way. I tried the way Richard was teaching you above, but my files are set up a little different from his, so I went this route. I also don't know much about tracking devices, etc. I'm still using my mouse and right and left click functions.

Your computer friend can try what he will, it will not work. Richard is playing PC-PGS. Files from him have the ending .pgs .

You and i are playing Mac-PGS. Files from us have the ending .goodsol .

They are not compatible. That means you will never open Richards file. You can only use Glen's film, or screenshots from several positions Richard maybe will post or you can hope, that i find the time to win it on my own and post then a solution which you can open. I then will also explain what you must do on your Mac to open games.

Hi Elaine, i got it.

There you can see the time i needed. You can add about 15 minutes i tried already yesterday.
Today i first made the stock empty. Then i did a screenshot which i printed. When you empty the stock first, then you can see, what cards are coming and you can arrange the cards in a better way for the next row. That i do only by the harder ones.

Here is now my solution.

application/octet-stream
spidertwosuits_1345494696.goodsol (6.8 k)

As you see is the ending .goodsol .

1. Download the file to your desktop (or into a folder you choose).
2. Change the ending if necessary from .txt to .goodsol .
3. Open your PGS.
4. Open "Spider 2 suits".
5. Ignore the game which opens. (I think it will be the same game which is good.)
6. Click on "Game" in the toolbar above and choose then "Open game".
7. Open then the downloaded file from me.
8. I let it on a position you can win it by your own. By using the undo- and redo-button you can go back to the start of the game and watch what i did to win it.

I hope all will be as i tried to explain.

Sorry I've been away most of the day. Liz had yet another hospital appointment re her accident at work 15 months ago. Yep FIFTEEN months ago. This necessitated a detour to the pub en route home.

The problems are that Mac users and Microsoft users cannot share uploaded files. Even those of us who are not using Mac PC's have problems because those bright sparks at Microsoft appear to relish throwing spanners into the works every time the launch a new "improved" version of windows. People with different operating systems don't see and therefore can't utilise the same basic instructions. Over the years we have used various methods that allow the vast majority of us to open one another's uploaded solutions. The problem is that they keep moving the goalposts.
Markus is trying to get Elaine to do precisely what I had suggested, but since he is also on a Mac it is more likely that another Mac user like Elaine will be able to get his instructions to work. I can only tell you what works with Windows Vista and what I used to get to work with earlier versions. We still have the additional problem that .pgs files and .goodsol files can only be opened with the software for their own programmes.
Anyway, I hope that the 5 pints I have just subjected myself to have not made this diatribe too difficult to understand.

Elaine...... We WILL get this sorted. We are a very determined bunch!

"If it has a .txt extension you can rename it, removing the .txt bit and making it .pgs instead"

Richard, that's the big difference in our explanations. You should have written:

"If it has a .txt extension you can rename it, removing the .txt bit and making it .goodsol instead."

BTW Mac users normally organize their work their Mac in a different way then PC- users, especially, when the PC-users are grown up with Windows-explorer.

This is Glen's link. Right click on it and select "Save link as". Put it onto Desktop. Now you have your own copy.
Find it on your desktop. Click on it so it starts to play. Once it's playing click on "View" and change the "Play speed" to "Slow". See if this helps.
-------------------------------------------------
For everybody else
We appear to be getting deeper and deeper into a mess. I thought that PGS (which Elaine is playing) uses .pgs extensions. I also thought that it was the 101 Collection that uses .goodsol extensions. As far as I am away neither programme can open each other's files. The problem is made even worse because of the incompatibility of Mac and standard Windows PC's.
Until we get enlightenment from either Thomas or Gregg I suggest that we don't turn Elaine into a raving alkie by confusing her any more.

Oh, I thought you guys had it figured out fine, but here is the definitive information:

- Files with the .pgs extension are for Pretty Good Solitaire [Windows Edition] (with 750 games) only.

- Files with the .goodsol extension are for Pretty Good Solitaire Mac Edition, Goodsol Solitaire 101 [both Windows and Mac], and Most Popular Solitaire [both editions].

- Neither type of file is intended to be read by human beings, but only to be loaded by the game software.

This means Mac users will need a '.goodsol' file (almost always), and Windows users can provide a compatible solution from either GS101 or MPS (but not PGS). Clear enough? :-)

You are always saying pretty much, especially "The Pub After".

Hi, Kathy: Thanks for your last post. Yes, there are other games that I play periodically but so far spider 2-suits is my favorite. I also like Pyramid and Indian patience. There is a whole slew of games that I haven't tried yet, but happily I just downloaded Freecell for MAC which I used to play on the PC so I'll be busy with that one. BTW, is there a "hints" or "game strategies" site somewhere around for general tips or does one post a big HELP when one is stuck like me?

Elaine, sometimes if you do a search on a certain game you will come across some hints or strategies. But I find the best way, if I'm really stuck, is just to post my problem and ask for help. For example, when I first started playing the game, Suspenseful, I noted that there were tons of 100% top scores, but I was losing a lot of games. I posted my problem and learned that there were ways to win that I didn't know about. So feel free to either search or ask away. Someone will help you.

Thanks again, Kathy. Looks like I'll have to try Suspenseful to broaden my horizons. Cheers to one and all, E.

Elaine, if you do try Suspenseful, the rules are not as clear as they could be. Most of the games are winnable. So if you see you're not winning them, I or anyone will be glad to help you.

Kathy, Is it a solitaire game? I don't see it on PGS.

Yes. It's right there between Surprise and Sweet Sixteen under the heading All Games. I know you have the MAC version. Maybe it isn't in that version? I'm sure Markus will let you know if it isn't.

Elaine, Suspenseful is not in the Mac-Edition. It will come in future versions.

Elaine we have on the Mac only 200 games. The PC-Version started once also with just a few games (40 or so, when i remember right) long ago. Now they have 740 games.
Gregg is at time working on the next 100 games, that means we may have at the end of the year 300 games.

Suspenseful will be included among the 100 new games in PGSME 2.2, to be released later this year.

(Note that a minor update will be released this week, but it will not contain any new games. It is recommended, though, as it fixes some bugs.)
