Just a question. I have played #1 through #130. But when I post my score it only registers 119 played. Why?

I hope someone knows the answer, Mike, because I don't want to have to play 75 more games to find out. It's like torture.

I answered this recently in another thread. The stats will only register the games in which YOU have made a move. So in 11 of the first 130 there are no possible moves so the stats don't even record them as losers.

These are my stats for the first 175 games of Block in self imposed Climb Mode. I have 13 games that didn't record at all. I couldn't see any possible moves in them.

I'm continuing playing Block under another name and trying to find higher scoring ones. 22 is still my top score at 5600 played.

Richard, as you know I play random game numbers, and I played 55 and all of them were recorded, and I could almost swear there were a few that I had no moves, not even the Aces. I'll play a few more and this time play close attention. It really doesn't matter, but I'm just curious.

Okay, this time, I played 67 games, and it didn't count the 2 games where I had no moves. However, it did count the games where I had no moves but where the Aces came up even though my score was 0.

You're right. Those games that were registered even though I had a score of 0 I must have made a move even though I didn't get any points from the move. Problem solved. BTW, I think the game would be more interesting if we could move the cards in a group. That way there might be some games that could be won.

That's exactly what happens Kathy. Yes, moving blocks of cards would help a lot. Even then it would probably be very difficult. As things stand Block is likely to remain un-won. I look forward to seeing the stats posted by the usual suspects.

Here is an interesting thought. Do you suppose that the more losing games of Block you play, the lower you will drop in the table?

Have you guys won any Arsenal or Windsor Castle games?

But seriously I think it may be as I suggested as 5.48, you have not lost as many games as he has. If I am correct you will drop beneath Mike if you play more games than he has. The other alternative that occurred to me was that it could be an alphabetical list.

We now have a strange situation whereby the person who submits 50 games wil be at the top of the table, yet the person who knows his/her pan in playing thousands in an attempt to WIN one will be at the bottom.....(Exactly the OPPOSITE of 101). Of course that nutter may actually fluke a winner eventually.
The average score of three is probably fairly close to what you'd get if you played every hand that was dealt to you. My average score is now 4 because I'm ignoring any game with less that 5 of a start.

Gregg, I was curious about Kathy's comment about everybody playing Block having an average score of 3 so I played 50 games which I then had a total score of 207, and it gave me an average score of 3 also. I don't know about over at MSU, but at U of I 207 divided by 50 is over 4.

(Sorry, Gregg, but with college football 2 weeks away, I gotta start getting my shots in! Are you looking forward to the MSU-Iowa rematch?)

There are two kinds of games that are popular - those that can be won nearly all the time (but usually not easily), such as FreeCell, and those that are very difficult to win. There needs to be some games that are difficult to win. As you can see, Block is difficult to win and it has generated more activity than many other of the new games.

I doubt Block is more difficult to win than, say, Tam O'Shanter.

As every possible combination of cards is present for every game, it follows that it is possible for us to win at least a few of every one of them. This includes Block, British Canister etc. If nobody plays them then it is absolutely certain that nobody will ever win one. If we all played a few hands of Block every day, sooner or later one of us would find the first winner.

I assumed you guys had it figured out. It was probably caused by somebody posting a single win and not playing any further. (It may even have been somebody testing the victory conditions for the game.)

As far as removing the "universal number" (more accurately, the unshuffled deal) is concerned, I think that is unlikely (though it is not my call).

My instinct is to disagree with both of you. For what you've deduced to be true is would follow that the total in the adjacent column would have to be 1622. The game that was "won " would have to be included in both totals.

The adjacent column is "Losses", which clearly should not include a win. :-)

There is, indeed, one more (i.e., 1622) in the "Total Games" column above, as expected, and this continues to be true on the server itself.

I really shouldn't attempt logical thinking at 1am, should I? I wasn't in my bed two minutes before I realized what a twit I'd been.
Almost everyone is trying to win Block. We all want to find a winner. This statement would have been true of every one of the hundreds of other PGS games at one point in their lives. Somebody had to be the first to win them. Some players like games that are almost impossible to lose, others like games that are almost impossible to win. That's as it should be.....something for everybody.
I'm sure that Mike and Trisha will agree that it is quite exciting when you get a good hand of Block and the cards keep coming up in your favour and you get closer and closer to achieving your personal best score, and heaven forbid, even beating it. It gives me a buzz anyway. I like it.

Re the Unshuffled Deck, or the Universal Number, or the Cheats Charter, or whatever you choose to call it........it's a pain in the derriere. Every honest player would like to see the back of it. Why not set the acceptable parameters of the "Select Game" box to one number fewer than it allows at present? Job done.
It would also go down very well if the offending "winner" was removed from the stats for Block.

>Gregg, any predictions on the Michigan-Michigan State game this weekend?

Oh, I predict that the "Big House" will have a lot more disappointed fans at the end of the day, but that here in East Lansing, there will be parties in the street.

Everybody I know on the team wants to take an undefeated record into Iowa at the end of the month. (Of course, I do not actually know anybody on the team. :-))

>I predict that Gregg will have a prediction.

True 'nuf. :-)

In case you were wondering, the biggest rivalry game of the year for Michigan State University is playing the University of Michigan (in college [American] football), which game takes place this Saturday. This year, both teams are undefeated (5-0) and ranked (at adjacent positions) in the Top 20 nationally (#16/#17 USA Today, #17/#18 AP).

I expect and hope that Michigan State will win.

Looking at the schedule, Iowa does not have an easy go of things for a few weeks (until Indiana :-)), and then you still have Ohio State to come!

Honestly, some of the pundits around here picked MSU to go to the Rose Bowl, at least partially because we do not have to contend with OSU this year (and they may be going elsewhere).

I knew that, and I originally meant to say that the Hawkeyes should take advantage of the break because of (most of) the rest of the schedule. (Poor editing on my part. :-))

>I hope we go up in the polls!

Although it makes no sense, mathematically, I suspect that you will pass Michigan after they lose tomorrow. :-)

(My father always used to point out how the #2 team would always plummet in the polls after losing to the #1 team, despite that being the exact outcome predicted by the rankings.)

I am probably playing about one game out of every ten that are offered to me randomly. It would follow that the winning percentage must be lower than 1:100000.

Donald Trump was indeed at R.G.U. to receive his doctorate. The press had predicted a large group of protesters. One man with a wee dog turned up. He is unpopular with a small section of the locals because his plans include the compulsory purchase of some land he requires. The vast majority think it's great that he is going to build the "best golf course in the world" in our area. Jobs will be created. It will bring money into the area. Good luck to the man. Whilst he was here he said that he would probably run for U.S.President next time around. I reckon that a businessman of his calibre would make a far better job than some other presidents you've had in my lifetime.
In some parts of the U.K. his surname is slang for an involuntary release of gas. Obviously presidential material.

Sorry Trisha, I admit I am hurtling through Block at breakneck speed. You can play a hand in next to no time. Not much skill involved, but as you said recently, it's addictive. The Eastern Orthodox Church venerates Saint Christopher on May 9. The Tridentine Calendar allowed a commemoration of Saint Christopher on 25 July only in private Masses. This restriction was lifted later (see General Roman Calendar as in 1954). Although the Roman Catholic Church still approves devotion to him, listing him in the Roman Martyrology among the saints venerated on 25 July[1], Pope Paul VI removed his feast day from the Roman Catholic calendar of saints in his 1969 motu proprio Mysterii Paschalis. At that time the church declared that this commemoration was not of Roman tradition, in view of the relatively late date (about 1550) and limited manner in which it was accepted into the Roman calendar.[2]

Larry, I'd have my doubts about simulations being run for Block. If that were so, surely they wouldn't have come up with such an unachievable difficulty rating of 1%. A truer percentage could actually be 1%.....1% of 1%.

I agree with you Frances. I don't know about the Plot, but I did win 13 packs a couple of times. The reason Block makes me so angry is the very fact that it is unwinnable. OK, in simple terms, imagine the "magic number" as 1,2,3,4,5. As every possible combination is available somewhere in PGS, 1,2,3,5,4 would be there, and as many permutations of 1,2,3,4,5 as exist. Now if you imagine Mike's magic number as 1,2 etc through to 52 you must realise that there are loads of combinations only 1 away from the perfect number. That's what you have to try and keep in mind when you are playing Block. There are numerous needles in that particular haystack. If it was an actual haystack, sooner or later somebody would sit on one. Let's persevere, but take care how you sit down.

Hi
I have done some calculations but just with 1 pack of cards
There are 52! possible deals
which is about 8 followed by 67 zeros
So suppose everybody in the world was to deal a different sequence of cards at the rate of one per second, it would take 600,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,00 0,000,000,000,000 years to deal all combinations.

Don't ever become an accountant Paul, and for goodness sake don't run for Chancellor of the Exchequer!.
In the "select game" tab you can choose between 1 and 214748364 different deals. Therefore 100 people would have to play 2,147,483 games each. There are 525,948 minutes in a year, so the theoretical task could be undertaken in about 4 years if the 100 people played a game each every minute.

Incidentally the 214748364 different deals in PGS has never made any sense to me. How can the figure remain constant irrespective of whether you are playing a simple one pack game or a very complex 4 pack game?

Hi Richard

a slight correction to your figures
it is 2,147,483,647 games so this comes to over 40 years

this number is apparently the highest that 32 bit cpu computer can handle and is the same for many games it is equal to 2 to the power of 31-1 whereas the total deals is 2 to the power of 52-1 so is well short of all the possible deals
it is also related a time problem like the millenium bug that will occur in 2038 as most computers use their date system from Jan 1 1970 and it use seconds to go up but when it will reach this number it will become a minus and think the date is 1901

Apologies Paul, a bit of a problem with the old copy and paste technique there.
What you are saying in effect is that only some of the possible combinations are present in PGS. Therefore with games like Block we don't even know that a winnable combination (apart from the unshuffled deck) is even present. How on earth do we find out?
I had been hoping to find a few high scores, but to date I cannot exceed 26, exactly 25% of a winning total! A major obstacle in the path of a winnable game is that any card covered by a king must remain buried until the entire stock has been exhausted. In fact any lower card covered by any face card is a huge problem. However, I'm playing it by choice so there is no point in moaning about it. I must be mad!

BTW, i think 52! is not the right number, because cards are dealt to the foundation piles during shuffle (when i remember the rules right), that means, there are permutations, which are leading to the same game at the end.

There is also quite a curious dealing method in Block. As the cards are dealt every playable card goes immediately onto the foundations before any other cards are dealt. I have seen 12 cards on the foundations before I get a chance to do anything. For this reason you will never see an ace in the tableau.

A good variant for later editions would be a spare cell or perhaps two that blocking cards could be put into. It is very annoying if you have a 2 covered by a king and have the 3 - k of the same suit in the tableau and are unable to move them.
The spare cell/s could even be restricted to Kings Only, but obviously you'd not be able to move them back into the tableau unless the stock was exhausted and there was an empty column.

Drat! Yes Larry. Two packs! How did we overlook something that obvious?

Yes Mike, there was a l-o-n-g waiting list before they could fit us in. They are installing gas central heating. Humping sacks of smokeless fuel is not all it's cracked up to be. Nor is emptying ashes and lighting a fire before you get any heat. It's starting to get very cold here. This can't come a moment too soon.
Approaching 1am here. Better hit the sack before they arrive.

We have central heating Mike, but not the type we want. Some people in our street even have running water and electricity.

Ha! I've not played it for a while Mike. Decent deals are very thin on the ground and it's got to the stage that it's quite boring. I may knock out a few more every now and again but that's it!

I have played #1 to #8000. Richard has played at least 16000 random by now. Looking at the stats there seemed to be a winner. But the consensus is that someone played the always winnable number just to be sure it could be won and then quit. It would be very unfair for anyone to play 50 hands with one of them being the always winnable and post. In fact we would all put a curse upon them. Of course. In can happen by accident. But a curse would still be in order. It's looks like we will play it once in a while. But not steady.

My Voodoo Doll looks like a Hedgehog now Mike. The person who posted the "winning" number will suffer every affliction known to medical science. Some of the needles were inserted in very eye-watering places. Saying that, there is no need for you not to curse him.

OK, Richard, Mike or anyone else who can help: THis is going to sound very naive and quite possibly stupid, too, but how do you get someone else's game numbers and stats?

I thought for sure that one of you would have won Block by now---

Maria....One way to see the stats is via your own ones. My example is for Block.

Open Block as normal and click on the "Stats" button.

Then your stats for Block will appear and you click on the button I've ticked below.

Once you are at the online stats you can navigate to those of every other game.

Oh, Richard, I can bring up my own stats-- I thought someone had said that he saw another player's numbers--perhaps I read the message wrongly. But mention was made of a winning number--

I probabyy got it all wrong----

When you see the stats there are more players listed at the very bottom than those above who have played the 50 hands required to have stats posted. If you go back and read this thread from the beginning you will find the answer in Gregg Seelhoff's own words.

While waiting for my eyes to get better (which will be soon), I've been playing Block. I still am under the impression it is unwinnable. Yesterday, after playing it for a while, my blood pressure even went up.

It's got to be frustrating if it raised my blood pressure. I'm trying to find a new game. Got up to around 400 on Tuxedo and hit the wrong button and lost a game. Maybe Thomas will come out with a new version soon I hope.

You'll have to think of a new nickname for me now. I just lost a tooth right in the front on the bottom. I look even funnier than I usually do. Maybe the people at the center will think I'm too funny looking and take up a collection for me to see the dentist.
