This is where you can post a specific game number for a specific game and ask other players whether it can be won.

An example of a game that cannot be won is game number 11982 of FreeCell.

Are any of the games in Ukranian Solitaire or Spider winnable? I must be on my 200th game and still haven't won. I'll keep going though.

since 23/12/01 I have played 792 games of Ukrainian Solitaire my statistics are 115 wins and 677 losses. Russian Solitaire is my downfall.

However, can game 398190753 of Australian Patience be won?

>Are any of the games in Ukranian Solitaire or Spider winnable?

Spider is definitely winnable. In fact, it appears that only a few Spider positions are not winnable. Spider is a game that requires a lot of skill and time. You can see that some people have gotten quite good at it at <http://www.goodsol.com/stats/games/spider.html>.

Ukrainian Solitaire has a lot more unwinnable positions and so is much tougher to win (although it doesn't take as much skill, I think). Stats for Ukrainian are at <http://www.goodsol.com/stats/games/ukrainian_solit aire.html>.

There are definitely unwinnable games of Penguin. They are rare, but not nearly so rare as in FreeCell. I'm not sure about #1610040448 offhand, but there is a possibility it is unwinnable. Perhaps someone could win it, which would prove it isn't :-)

I have been a registered Good Sol player for 3 years. I started at the first listed game and played every game until I won it once. There is a game called 'forty nine' I have not won in 2000 tries. My daughter who is also very good never won it. I have a 13 card average. Give me a game number you have won, so I can go on to the next game. :-)

Hi Phyllis,
Hello from the Emerald isle. I too have been playing PGS for the past 3 years and have had serious trouble with "Forty Nine" up until last week, when I hit gold with game number 371399969.
It just made my "New Year". Hope it works for you too.

If you want solutions to a low numbered FreeCell game, you might be able to find them in Michael Keller's catalog of FreeCell solutions. To see the catalog, just go to <http://www.freecell.org> and click on the link to Michael's site, that will take you right to a list of game numbers of the solutions. 1941 is one of the solutions in the catalog. Note that although these solutions are for the Microsoft FreeCell that comes with Windows, if you have Pretty Good Solitaire version 8.0.0 or higher the game numbers are the same and the solutions will apply.

I don't know, it probably is winnable. That game in Pretty Good Solitaire is the same game as in FreeCell Wizard, so anyone who can win it in Pretty Good Solitaire could tell you that it is winnable.

to Phyllis Rich
For fourty nine try number 234850081 I have just won it, however I had to turn off auto play in order to do so. (it took a number of undos to figure out the winning moves.) The strategy hint is to use the foundations as temporary storage cells and don't be afraid to take cards off there and put them back in play on the tableau. In general, turning off auto play often allows one to win games that are unwinnable if it is on. Hope that helps, good luck!

>Are there games that until now never have been won?

As of the latest stats update, the following games have only been won twice:

Contradance, Darwin, Forwards and Backwards, Fourteens, Spaces and Aces, Tam O'Shanter.

The following games have only been won once:

All in a Row, Kings and Aces, Little Gate, McClellan, Picture Patience, Super Challenge FreeCell.

And the following games have never been won at all:
Bridesmaids, Boudoir, Box Kite, Knotty Nines, Queens and Jacks.

A few of these games aren't as hard as all that, they simply haven't been played very much.

Yes, assuming that you are talking about the version in Pretty Good Solitaire. I have won 1 game out of 40.

King Tut will also be available in the next release of Action Solitaire. There, clearing the pyramid scores a bonus, but is not essential for advancing to the next round.

I won game number All in a Row game #856939713. But there appears to be a bug or something. You discard all the gards and it doesn't count as a win or show up in the stats. I had game saving turned on, so when I played the same game number again, it shuffled, replayed the whole thing, and won it. I started with the Ace of Clubs and went down to 2 of clubs in order ending with a 2 of spades.

Hello Yvonne
thank you again and the same thing happened to me as well on All in a Row game 856939713 and it stops as soon as you put the 2 of spades down
what i did as i also had game save on was to click on the game so it plays by itself and after a few goes like this it gave you a win on the statistics and the usual winning noise

This game is winnable.

Start by immediately digging out the Ace of Diamonds (in the leftmost column) and emptying the column. Then get the Ace of Spades and empty the rightmost column, playing the KS and QH in the left column. Build the left column down in sequence while freeing the Aces of Hearts and Diamonds (in that order).

I hope this helps. :-)

In the FreeCell game it states

It is believed (although not proven) that every game is winnable.

Proof
8 stacks of 7 cards in each stack
top row playable.
4 card temp stack

Proof by contridiction:
If I prove that one possible game is not winable, regardless if it is included in the games of the computer or not then akk games are not winable.

Example
On the deal
top row = J J J J 8 8 8
play J J J J goes to temp stack
replaced by 6 6 6 6
unwinable

>It is believed (although not proven) that every game is winnable.

The documentation for the (lousy) version of FreeCell shipped in Windows is simply wrong. It has been long known that game #11982 is not winnable. The game was later updated to support game numbers beyond 32000, but the documentation was never corrected.

By contrast, Pretty Good Solitaire (the game featured here) explicitly lists the unsolvable FreeCell game numbers within the first 1000000 games. More comprehensive information on FreeCell can be found at http://www.freecell.org .

For anybody who has not already done so, please download Pretty Good Solitaire, at http://www.goodsol.com/download.html, or Most Popular Solitaire, at http://www.moposol.com/download.html . Both of these games have compatible deals but are far better than the Microsoft version (nevermind all of the other games included).

Of course, I am biased :-), so try them for yourself.

I think this game is unwinnable because you finish up with two rows covered with 2s with the 3s hidden.

I very much doubt if it's winnable. None of the possible opening moves improve matters one iota. They just make your situation worse.

Paul Forsdick (Pondpaul)

I got your message and I guess the game is winnable but I don't know how to decode the message. What do I do with all the numbers? What do the numbers mean and how do I use them? This is my first query and not used to the decoded message. Thanks

Dennis

Thanks for your reply.

Hi Dennis
what i do is right click on it and click save target as and save it to the desktop.

then open pretty good solitaire and play the double klondike game. click game and select open game
change the Look in to desktop and you will see the file you have downloaded.
click open and the game will automatically play to the position I left it at.
you can see how the moves worked out by keep on clicking undo (many times) until you get to the beginning and then you can keep pressing the redo to go through all the moves. if you play a move any other way you will loose the rest of the moves

I left the game on auto play. You can play any card and the game will self finish from where Paul saved it. Play the 2S and it should self destruct.

Hi all! I am new to the forum because I cannot solve Penguin game #710414849 in FreeCell Wizard version 3.0.1 ( don't know if that is necessary of not ) I usually zip through these games in just a couple of minutes, but I have been trying to win this game for several days!! Any help would be appreciated!

My opinion is that it is unwinnable Rebecca. I've spent a fair bit of time on it but can't find an opening that can be exploited without causing other columns to become blocked. The Rules state that Penguin is 96% winnable. This may be one of the elusive 4%. I'll keep trying but I'm not hopeful.

Richard, I appreciate your effort! Just knowing that there were some games that were unwinnable was a comfort. I have finally gone on to another game ( which I won in about 1 minute - what a relief! ) It was nice to discover this forum-everyone seems very helpful and friendly, thanks again!

OK Rebecca, I think you were right to move on. I've gone back to it several times since my last post, hoping that I'd see something I'd missed before. No joy though. Almost certainly unwinnable. Glad you like the forum.

Our holiday was super Donna, thanks. We went all over the place visiting castles and other historic places. Half of the fun can be actually finding them. Some are very well hidden. It also ensures that we are mostly on minor roads that we've never been on previously. We always see plenty of wildlife and nice scenery en route. I guess it just suits our advancing years. I'll make a post or two for you in the Pumpkin thread tomorrow. We can't have you admitting defeat. That just won't do.
