Goodsol Newsletter #80 ----------------------- http://www.goodsol.com Pretty Good Solitaire wins Peoples Choice Award ---------------------------------------------- We have just returned from the Shareware Industry Conference in Rochester NY. Pretty Good Solitaire was nominated for the Shareware Industry Award for Best Non-Action Game this year. It did not win that award (it was won by a puzzle game called JigJag - see <http://www.sic.org/2004nominees.asp> for the full list of winners). Pretty Good Solitaire was previously nominated in 1999, 2001, and 2003 and won in 1999 and 2001. The Shareware Industry Awards are voted on by members of the shareware industry. However, Pretty Good Solitaire did win the Peoples Choice Award for best shareware non-action game in 2004. This award is voted by the public at web sites such as download.com, Tucows, and Simtel. This award was a complete surprise as Pretty Good Solitaire has not won it since it won in 1999 and 2000. The full list of all winners is at <http://www.sic.org/peopleschoice.asp>. I'd like to thank all the people who voted for Pretty Good Solitaire this year and all the customers and users who made this possible. New Online Games ------------------ http://www.goodsol.com/online We have three new games in our online games area - Aces and Kings, Cruel and Yukon. Play simple versions of these popular games for free online in your browser. It is great for when you are at work and without Pretty Good Solitaire. All three games feature autoplay and easy right click quick move. Try out the new games at <http://www.goodsol.com/online>, and don't forget that you can also play the older games Klondike, FreeCell, Spider, Golf, and Pyramid online as well. Reduced Office Hours for August ------------------------------- Beginning Monday, July 26, Goodsol Development will be operating under special circumstances for several weeks. Anne is going in for an operation and will not be working for a period of time. This will mean that the response times for email order questions, support problems, and registration code requests will be longer than usual. Orders will be processed as usual. Thanks for your patience! Featured Game - Cruel ---------------------- Cruel is a popular and somewhat unique solitaire game. At the start of the game, four cards are dealt out to 12 tableau piles. The Aces are removed to form four foundation piles. The object is to found the Aces and build four foundation piles up in suit from Ace to King. The game is won when all the cards are moved to the foundations. The top card of each tableau pile is available for play. Move cards from the tableau to the foundations if possible. The tableau piles are built down in suit. When play on the tableau comes to a standstill, the tableau can be redealt by clicking on the stock. The cards are collected from the tableau starting with the last pile (lower right) of the tableau back to the first pile (top left), with the cards from the last pile on the bottom. They are then redealt four cards to a pile starting with the first pile. Because of the way the cards are redealt, if no moves are made in the tableau the cards will be redealt back exactly the same way they were previously. Therefore, after every deal you must be able to make at least one move in the tableau or the game is lost. There is no limit to the number of redeals as long as you can make a move after a redeal so that the next redeal will change the order of the cards. According to the top scores list at <http://scores.goodsol.com/topscores/scores/pgs/cru el.html>, an average player can win Cruel about 33% of the time, with very good players winning about 60% of the time. Cruel is the 600 games in Pretty Good Solitaire, which can be downloaded from <http://www.goodsol.com/download.html>. --------------------------------------- Thomas Warfield - Software Designer - support@goodsol.com Anne Warfield - Order Fulfilment - orders@goodsol.com ©2004 Goodsol Development Inc.
