Q: In Pretty Good Solitaire, how do I delete games from the Favorites list?
A: Click on the Options button on the main screen, go to the Groups and
Wizard area, and highlight Favorites on the left side. You can then add or
delete games on the right side.
Note that you can also create your own groups of games here and add or
delete games from the groups.
Q: There is a certain game number of a certain game that I cannot beat.
Is this game winnable?
A: I recommend posting the game and the game number on our Is It
Winnable? forum at http://www.goodsol.net/forum/messages/18/18.html
There are a lot of regular readers of that forum and someone might be
able to solve that game. Also, if you are looking for some challenging
games to play, you'll find some difficult game numbers on this forum.
Q: I've downloaded some card sets but I can't get them to work in the
game. What do I need to do?
A: After you download the card set, you need to run the downloaded file to
install it. It needs to be installed in the same folder as the game in order
for the game to see it. For Pretty Good Solitaire, this is usually the
C:\Program Files\goodsol folder. If you are installing card sets for use in
other games besides Pretty Good Solitaire, be sure to set the installation
folder of the card sets to the same folder where the game is installed.
After the card set is installed, you then should be able to see the new card
set in the card set list in the Options menu in the game.
Note that you need Pretty Good Solitaire version 8 or higher to use card
sets.
Q: I have a new computer. How do I transfer Pretty Good Solitaire from
my old computer to my new one?
A: First, install using the original setup installation file (copying files over
will not work). If you don't still have that, you can download the trial
version from http://www.goodsol.com/download.html and then use your
registration code to register it (if you have purchased).
To copy your statistics, you need to copy the entire data folder.
In version 7.2 and earlier, the data folder is the Games folder under the
main program folder (for the Quest Edition, this would usually be
C:\Program Files\goodsol01\Games).
In version 8.0 and higher, the data folder location depends on the version
of Windows. In Windows 98/ME, it is usually the C:\Windows\Application
Data\Goodsol\Pretty Good Solitaire folder. In Windows NT/2000 and XP, it
is usually the C:\Documents and Settings\[Windows User
Name]\Application Data\Goodsol\Pretty Good Solitaire folder, where
[Windows User Name] is your user name for Windows.
Q: I'm having a hard time beating the tile matching layouts in Pretty Good
MahJongg at http://www.goodmj.com . Do you have any hints?
A: I suggest starting with some of the easier layouts, such as Kids 28, Kids
36, and so on. Try to remove matching pairs that make as many new tiles
available as possible. A good guide is the number of matches in the
statusbar at the bottom. You want to keep that number as high as
possible. If it drops too low, you may want to back up and try something
else.
Featured Game - Rank and File

Rank and File is a classic variation of the solitaire game Forty Thieves.
Rank and File is a two deck game. At the start of the game 40 cards are
dealt out in 10 piles of 4 cards each with only the top card of each pile face
up and visible. The remaining cards form the stock and are turned over
one card at a time to a waste pile. When Aces appear in the play they are
moved up to found the 8 foundation piles, which are built up in suit in the
usual way. The game is won when all the cards are moved up to the
foundations. The game is lost if you go through the entire stock pile
without winning, as there is no redeal.
Among the 40 card tableau, building is down by alternate color. Groups of
cards may be moved as a unit if they are of descending sequence in
alternating colors. Empty spaces can be filled by any card.
Rank and File is a simple game to play, and it usually can be won. An
average player can win Rank and File 80% of the time, while a good
player can win very nearly every time.
Rank and File is just one of several similar variations of Forty Thieves,
most of which are easier than Forty Thieves itself. Other games that are
very similar to Rank and File are Emperor and Number Ten.
