        <description><![CDATA[<p><br /></p><p>Been wondering for awhile.   </p><p><br /></p><p>Do we know if there will be a new update for both windows and mac version anytime next year (doesn&#39;t seem like for this year I bet) and onward?      Been no update for the windows version since last year (taking a break and I know that the Mac version update only once a year or once every 2 years.    Or is it the end of PGS eventually or would Thomas have someone take over it after him if he doesn&#39;t update anymore eventually.  </p><p>I know Thomas stated here before he went through a couple health scares and wonder if he&#39;s having health issues again.    </p><p><br /></p><p>I also noticed the blog is not showing anymore as the type pad is closed.</p>]]>

        <description><![CDATA[<p>Hi. I&#39;ve been doing some research and have some questions about Canfield. Normally I&#39;d just let this go, but Canfield is noteworthy enough to deserve discussion.</p><p>Both  &quot;100 Games of Solitaire&quot; (Coops 1939) and Morehead/Mott-Smith say that you must move either a top card or an entire pile--partial tableau sequences is not allowed:</p><ul><li>&quot;Sequences on tableau may be moved bodily, but not parts of sequences.&quot;</li><li>&quot;an entire pile must be moved as a unit for building on another pile&quot;</li></ul><p>Pretty Good Solitaire, along with many (but not all) other implementations, allows partial sequences to be moved. Was this change intentional to make the game easier, or for some other reason?</p><p>On a related topic, PGS rules for Canfield variant Storehouse directly references &quot;100 Games of Solitaire&quot;. In that book, it says &quot;Vacancies in the tableau row are refilled only with cards from the pack, or the talon if no pack exists.&quot; (In context, talon == waste). A similar rule is mentioned for Chameleon. However, in Pretty Good Solitaire, and virtually all other implementations I can find, vacancies are instead filled from the reserve, like standard Canfield. My guess is this is just to make the implementation simpler, but superficially it seems like it could have a pretty big effect on the difficultly.</p><p>Thanks!</p><p>Chris</p>]]>

        <description><![CDATA[<p>I was introduced to this solitaire a year or so back. I emailed a description to Tom once I worked out not only that nothing like it exists (as far as I can find, anyway) in PGS, but my timing was poor and coincided with his illness. And as it&#39;s fun and different and some of us probably own actual physical playing cards, I offer it here both in case anyone recognises it and can give it a name, and as a suggestion for a solitaire you actually need cards and a table for.</p><p>No name for this solitaire is known. It was taught to Jane, an optician friend and colleague, by her bridge champion mother, when Jane was a child.</p><p>Two standard decks.</p><p>Objective: eight foundations headed with K</p><p>Deal out the first 8 different cards as foundation bases; duplicates and kings should be returned to the deck; reshuffle stock once bases established.</p><p>Deal 8 stacks of 12 cards, face up. Only the top card of any stack is available for play.</p><p>The objective is to play cards to the foundations until each contains 13 cards headed by a king. Suits are entirely irrelevant.</p><p>The foundations are built oddly; the first card played to a base is double the base (subtracting 13 if necessary); subsequent cards are the result of adding the base to the current top card.</p><p>so the possible sequences are:</p><p>A 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 J Q K</p><p>2 4 6 8 10 Q A 3 5 7 9 J K</p><p>3 6 9 Q 2 5 8 J A 4 7 10 K</p><p>4 8 Q 3 7 J 2 6 10 A 5 9 K</p><p>5 10 2 7 Q 4 9 A 6 J 3 8 K</p><p>6 Q 5 J 4 10 3 9 2 8 A 7 K</p><p>7 A 8 2 9 3 10 4 J 5 Q 6 K</p><p>8 3 J 6 A 9 4 Q 7 2 10 5 K</p><p>9 5 A 10 6 2 J 7 3 Q 8 4 K</p><p>10 7 4 A J 8 5 2 Q 9 6 3 K</p><p>J 9 7 5 3 A Q 10 8 6 4 2 K</p><p>Q J 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 K</p><p>The first stage of play consists of working from left to right along the foundations, trying to play cards from the eight stock piles to the foundations. Enough of the base card should be visible as a reminder of the amount to add to the top card for the next as the foundations are built.</p><p><strong>Stealing</strong></p><p>The top card of a foundation pile (with the exception of the base, which is fixed) may be moved to another foundation, as long as it follows the building rule for the destination pile and as long as it&#39;s not a K, which, once played to a foundation, locks the foundation pile against further changes.</p><p>Once all possible plays have been made, the leftmost of the stock piles with piled content is dealt out from left to right and continuing until the pile in hand is exhausted. The starting point for the deal is the space from which the stock was picked, and that pile and any to its left should overlap with previous cards; undealt stock piles to the right are stacked and not overlapped.</p><p>Once the stock pile in hand has been dealt out, working again from left to right across the foundations, cards should be played from the tableau, following the building rules and stealing if helpful. Once all possible moves have been made, the next stock pile should be picked up and dealt as before.</p><p>Once all the last stock pile has been dealt out, the second stage of play is entered.</p><p>The tableau will be in the form of eight overlapping columns of cards. Moves to the foundations, continuing to follow the building rules above, should be made. Spaces created in the tableau may be filled with any available card, where the only cards available for play are the topmost of any pile.</p><p>The game is a balancing act between keeping enough unlocked foundation piles to allow stealing between them and moving cards from the tableau to the foundation, and keeping spaces available for freeing needed but unavailable cards, until the foundation piles are all locked by being headed with a king.</p><p>My intuition says this could be winnable around half the time with careful play and some luck.</p><p><br /></p><p>It sounds a lot more complicated than it is. :) However, it&#39;s a game that requires planning and thought as well as mechanics and a degree of luck.</p>]]>

        <description><![CDATA[<p>(From Facebook).</p><p>This is Debbie Butler - Mike&#39;s wife. I am posting the very sad news that Mike<strong> passed away on February 4th, </strong>2022. Mike was a good man and a good friend - always doing small favors for the folks in our neighborhood. Because Mike was able to be home when our son Mikey was young. As Mike has been best friends with Roger for 72 years, being at home made it possible for Mikey to become lifelong friends and brothers with Cody and Ryan for the past 27 years.  Mike was always there and was Dad to all. This has been the most beautiful and significant gift in his life.  He loved playing and recording music with &quot;Uncle Kim&quot; many times sharing tracks via email but, whenever there were family get togethers - there was always the music and Mike&#39;s beautiful voice. The last few years have been very difficult for Mike as he had progressive degenerative spine problems that caused him a great deal of pain which got to the point, he could no longer play golf - one of his life&#39;s passions.         <description><![CDATA[<p>In the UK we currently have a daily TV show about scams etc. They employ a considerable number of ethical hackers to discover how actual people had been scammed out of their money. Their findings are alarming.</p><p>Firstly, we all order goods online and have to fill in our details on numerous companies forms. They often ask for a cell phone and a line line phone number &quot;In case we need to phone you&quot;. They are just harvesting information. Many of these companies have had historical &quot;data breaches&quot; where their websites were hacked and enormous amounts of people&#39;s information stolen. However, those are just the ones that have been reported. These companies are under no legal obligation to inform anyone. Your personal details could have come into the public domain in this manner. This often included actual passwords that the volunteers were still using.</p><p>Social Media is the scammers treasure trove. It is jammed with information that users don&#39;t realise they are disclosing. Bots have been developed to &quot;shave&quot; all of them. When you consider the vast sums of money that these Social Media platforms change hands for you should be aware that YOU are the prey. &quot;Elon Musk threatened Monday to terminate his $44 billion plan to buy Twitter, accusing management of failing to comply with his request to provide data he seeks, which includes the number of <strong>fake accounts, bots and spam&quot;. </strong> Digest that. <strong>44 billion</strong> bucks that he is confident he can recoup and earn more money from. He and presumably Twitter know that it is infested. Facebook and presumably others think it&#39;s cute to wish you a happy birthday. Valuable info disclosed. Even people who don&#39;t use Social Media can have their data harvested because another member of their family has leaked info about them. After watching one show I decided to examine my own passwords etc and make them impossible for anyone to find. During that process I saw the full names and addresses of one deceased forum member and one still very much alive. An alternative address and details was also included for that person&#39;s sister. All have now been safely deleted. Perhaps the sister has Social Media accounts and divulges innocuous looking info like &quot;It&#39;s my brother&#39;s birthday today&quot; More pieces of the jigsaw. Perhaps her info had been disclosed in a data breach.</p><p>The following case alarmed me. It should alarm all of you.</p><p>A woman had a parcel delivered to her house from a well known company. She hadn&#39;t ordered it but it had been paid for in full. She was too busy to contact them at that time, but she&#39;d just been scammed out of &pound;3000 (minus the trifling price of the items in the box that had been delivered). All the scammer needed to open an account in her name was her full address, her date of birth, <strong>AN</strong> email address and <strong>A</strong> cell phone number. The company verified this new account by sending an email and phoning a burner phone. On the strength of that they granted the scammer a &pound;3000 credit limit that could be used to buy goods from them. The crafty scammer then bought goods to the full value and had them delivered to a click and collect store instead of the home address they already successfully sent goods to.</p><p>Decent AV protection was of course advised, but it was surprising how many people used the same password for multiple accounts. Even minor variation of it could be readily worked out.</p>]]>

        <description><![CDATA[<p>When members communicate with me using the forum&#39;s email facility, their messages appear here but copies of those messages are also sent to my Hotmail account.</p><p>Issues have arisen twice recently when I have &quot;replied&quot; to Ken <strong>from copies in Hotmail</strong>. I type my responses and click Send and they appear to have been sent successfully. However, the recipient does not receive them and it was only after that that I discovered that no record of those relies got recorded in my Hotmail Sent folder.</p><p>Afterthought ......         <description><![CDATA[<p>How much work would it take to adapt Stones for PGMJ? For the record, I&#39;m not referring to the game also known as Ishido, which is already fully implemented and adapted with variations in PGMJ, but the MSEP game, which is apparently adapted from Ishido itself.</p><p>The thing that makes Stones unique is that its tiles have three attributes compared to Ishido&#39;s two, and there are wildcard stones. This might necessitate the use of mahjong tiles instead of abstract tiles, as they can have the attributes of symbol and suit, and the third attribute would be color. The wildcard tiles would be Dragon tiles as with Pyramid of Wild Dragons.</p><p>I suppose, given the above, it might be better to base the adaptation on Pyramid of Wild Dragons directly, but with fewer tiles - Stones has 84 tiles in all - though it would be quite a different adaptation. That ought to sidestep legal issues, but then any adaptation would since it wouldn&#39;t be exactly the same.</p><p>Any further thoughts on this, especially from Gregg?</p><p>Bastiko</p>]]>

        <description><![CDATA[<p>I particularly like 2 of the new games these being  Klonfield  and Triskaide  and have played these many times.</p><p>I have played 600 games of Triskaide including games 1-500 and have not yet found a losing game.</p><p>I have played Klonfield 670 times including games 1-500 but there is one losing game I believe,  this being game 388</p><p>Paui</p>]]>

        <description><![CDATA[<p>I was looking at this year in roman numerals which is MMXXII and I was wondering when we get another year with 3 pairs of letters and I think it is MMCCII which is 2202 and then I do not think it happens again and the&nbsp;last time I think it happened was probably CCXXII&nbsp;which was year 222</p><p>I may be wrong though.</p>]]>

        <description><![CDATA[<p>I just realized that I missed our (business) anniversary. 😌</p><p>Last Sunday, September 26, was the 20th anniversary of my first contribution to Goodsol Development products, the delivery of the first version of a library that it still used in <strong><em>Pretty Good Solitaire</em></strong> to this day (albeit upgraded quite significantly over the years).  We have been working together ever since.  20 years!</p><p>Technically, I think I started working on the library the previous Friday (September 21, 2001).</p><p>Together, we have published more Solitaire games than anybody else on the planet.</p><p>So Happy (belated) Anniversary, Tom! 😉</p>]]>

        <description><![CDATA[<p>My Goodsol directory is saved on my machine but also gets backed up using a cloud service.   When some of the files in the goodsol directory on my Windows 10 machine became corrupt,  (C:\users\[Windows User name]\AppData\Roaming\Goodsol\Pretty Good Solitaire)  I deleted the directory on my machine and pasted in a backup copy from the cloud service.  It was pasted into a new version of the same ..\goodsol directory.  </p><p>I started GoodSol to play FreeCell (my main game in which I have 14K victories and no defeats), it showed the correct number of victories with no losses.   But when I played a game  of freecell and won, it showed only a single victory, having lost the record of all the earlier ones.     What else needs to be done to transfer statistics besides transferring that goodsol directory?</p>]]>

        <description><![CDATA[<p><br /></p><p>Does anyone find the game Fascination frustrating sometimes?    I have.        I think I&#39;ll stick to the bonus variation of the game.   </p><p>i&#39;m going to give Attraction a try when that comes to the Mac version.   </p><p><br /></p><p>Fascination Garden is pretty good....I would only get like maybe a couple or 3 losses in between a few wins.  A little bitter than Fascination.</p>]]>
