Problem with the stats

edited January 2014 in iPad Apps
Hi Gregg,

I have sometimes serious problems with the stats. Yesterday i have had small problems with iBooks. To solve them, i shutted down my iPad 2 and after that started it again. When i then wanted to play the next game of Demons and thieves (Most popular solitair) i recognized, that the games i have played were gone and my winning percentage fell from 100% to 0.5%. The games i have already playes were signed with a red star and no game numbers also.
That's with all four Apps.

Where are my stats and is there chance to get them back? If so, how? What must i do?

Best wishes Markus :((

Something seems to happening to corrupt your database files, but I have never been able to reproduce this problem on any of our devices in any of our iPad games, so I am at a loss about what could be happening.

In theory, the database files should be backed up via iTunes and could be restored that way (though with the loss of any results since the last backup, obviously). However, I have not been on speaking terms with the latest versions of iTunes, so I am not sure how this would be accomplished.

I am continuously testing all of our iPad games, attempting to reproduce your statistics issues (and one other rare bug), and I will see what I can figure out with iTunes. (Making iTunes like our devices again was never a priority until now. :) )

Markus, I don't know if you heard that my computer was out of commission for a couple of days. So because of that I had to go to the local library to use their computer. While there I ran into a former co-worker who I hadn't seen in 8 years. She told me that her son was engaged to an Estonian woman who was absolutely GORGEOUS! Maybe after visiting Richard in Scotland, I'll have to make a side trip to Estonia so maybe I can get lucky like my friend's son...

The best have gone. You have to be quick!

Gregg, being back at home, all my stats came back.

It appeared on my shorttrip to England. It happened as before once, so i thought...
The only games who are missing are the games i have played after the problem occurs.

Can you explain this to me?

P.s.: i think it must have been a bad curse from Richard ( being so near to him ).

Nah! You were too close to Westminster. The government there screws everything up. :)

I didn't know you were in the government. :))

Yes. They put me in charge of cold air. They manage all of the hot air themselves. :))

BTW, Was your trip a success?
  • Member, Beta Tester
And i thought they have put you in charge of pub checking. =))

BTW: that we will see in the next month. So far: places are now hurting, which haven't hurt before. (Just for information: that must be a good sign.)

Sounds promising. We wish you good luck.

Did you connect to iTunes after you returned? Perhaps it somehow determined that the database was corrupted and restored your old one.

Honestly, NO, I cannot explain this to you (but I am happy that it is working again).

    >Can you explain this to me?<

I'll try: After the stats have gone, i played some games in Demons and thieves (#1341 and #1342). The stats showed them as winners while i was in England and all the other games (#1 to #1340) with the red star (i can send you a picture how the stats look like if you want (sometimes there is also simply nothing)).

Back in Estonia the stats have been back (without being in iTunes BUT i can not remember, if i have turned on my iMac before i recognized it, that they are back, or not :( ). I hadn't need to connect the iPad with itunes.

    Any more questions?

    Hi Gregg,

i have problem with the stats again. I have played Free Fan an just won the next, and then the app stopped. I had to restart the Computer and after that, it showed something interesting. He showed, that i have made 52 points, but have lost it. And more crazy is, that next i have opened PGSME Free Fan was put down to game #1 in climb mode. Any suggestions? Where can i find the stats on my Mac? Maybe i can change it with an Time Capsule file. Or any other idea? Thank's for some help.

    >Where can i find the stats on my Mac?

This depends on whether you bought PGSME directly from Goodsol, or from the Mac App Store.

In the former case (from Goodsol), statistics are at:
    ~/Library/Pretty Good Solitaire/[playername]/

In the latter case (Mac App Store), statistics are (sandboxed) at:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.goodsol.PrettyGoodSolitaire/Data/Library/Pretty Good Solitaire/[player name]/

Yes, you should be able to get older statistics from Time Machine (presuming you have an older image, of course), and the game results have obvious names: Free Fan would be any files starting with "freefan."

    I hope this helps.

    Hi Gregg!

Nope. I could find the folder with the playername, but it is not in hte Library and not in the Library Containers. It is in the documents from users, where i could find the Pretty Good Solitaire folder. When i am going to Time Capsule an restore the .climb .goodsol .log files for FreeFan, than there is no change. Still the stats are set to 0. I have once bought it directly from you, even with sending me the CD. From that on , i have always got the actual one by updating.
Actually i am using macOS High Sierra Version 10.13.6. Any other ideas? I know, that i cannot see all, there are hidden files, but i don`t remember, how to make them show again.

Best from Estonia with snow (at least)

    Hi Gregg, me again!

Those files cannot be the right one, because, when i delete them and after that i am playing a game, then there is no new file for the stats made. They must be somewhere else. I am looking for your mentioned passes, but i cannot find them. Do you have any other ideas?

Do you have any similar function on your Mac Markus? I just searched for "Hidden". Then it showed me where to look.

Ah, yes. '~/Library' is hidden on High Sierra. In 'Finder', open the 'Go' menu and then press then Control (or Command, or Option?) key, and then 'Library' should appear in the menu. Once you are in the Library folder, everything should be visible.

To find and confirm the location, you could create a new player (say, "test123"), play a quick game with that player, and then go to '~/Library' and search for the player name. I find that on an upgraded system, I sometimes end up in a user folder for an older user, not the current one (~), or in a player folder for a different player than the one I am actually using. ("Gregg" is used for my real statistics, "test" is used for reproducing issues or just trying highlighted deals, and "beta" is used for development.)

    I hope that helps.

    Nope again.

I created the new player "For Gregg" an played two games Free Fan in normal mode. After that i searched for For Gregg (or just Gregg), no result. Even when i turned on all files by Terminal ("defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -boolean true;killall Finder") and searched after that, no folder with the name For Gregg. Any other ideas? Somewhere must the stats be hidden. But where?
  • Member, Beta Tester
Sounds to me like "All files" does not include hidden ones Markus.
  • Member, Beta Tester
Gregg, found it at least. Will try on, and let you know my success.

Richard, with Mac is mostly easy. It`s just working. But when you have some problems, then it can be difficult (especially for none specialists).
  • Member, Beta Tester
Gregg, good news. I got them back. When they crashed, then the .climb file just didn't exist anymore. The .goodsolc and .log had still been, but not for the climb mode.

    Thank's for your help.
  • Member, Beta Tester
Btw. With cmd+shift+. you can show unhidden files and after that you can hide them again. But after that, you have to know, where to search, because by searching For Gregg, still no results. Next time (if it really should occur again), i know what to do.
  • Member, Beta Tester
Glad you are getting it fixed Markus. :)

I am glad that you finally found it, Markus. Since there was clearly something incorrect about the file paths I gave, it could be helpful if you posted where you found the files, so I can give a correct path next time.

One of the more frustrating things about macOS is how the system tries to hide so much from users, making it difficult to find things. Unless you are doing something fairly obvious, the search function in Finder is often useless, and I end up searching from Terminal.
  • Member, Beta Tester
It was hidden. When you open Finder, then select Macintosh HD (or how younhave named it). By clicking Cmd+Shift+. you can show the hidden folders. After that it was, i think your pass:

    Users/Markus/Library/PrettyGoodSolitaire/[name]

    (When i remember right.)
The most irritating thing is, that you (i) cannot (could not) search for it, even when i have unhidden all folders. That is strange. You have to know, where it is, to find it. There are at least 3 different Library folders in iOs.
