This is the area for questions about Pretty Good Solitaire. The latest version of Pretty Good Solitaire is version 8.1.1. It can be downloaded from <http://www.goodsol.com/download.html>.

My big question is:
Can all the games on "Three Blind Mice" be solved?

It seems some are impossible. Please answer.

No, I would say that there are many impossible Three Blind Mice games. The best anyone has been able to do is about 20%. See <http://www.goodsol.com/stats/games/three_blind_mic e.html>. I suspect it would be possible to do a lot better than 20%, but I also suspect there are impossible positions.

I have a 28.6 on three blind mice, but have only played 7 games....43 to go!

How about some strategy tips per game? Although I'm mathematically challenged I'm addicted to Patience/Solitaire. With new games, I amass big losing scores before winning a game. Is there a way to bucket the losers rather than clear all the scores? Oh, rats, I guess that that would invalidate the competetive lists, where I'll never live!

You can post as Anonymous, or put something in the name box without a password and it will post as that. You can also click on Register in the upper right corner and select a username and password to have an actual logon.

My husband and I like to challenge each other in PGS (particularly in Spider). There is no "winner" though as neither will quit until they have beaten it. Is there a possibility of a "move counter", or some other method of determining "the winner" (besides a stop watch)?

I tried QC the other night and, after about 8 games (such a fast study) realised that it is flawed, Thomas. It resists legal card shifts and then, in a stuttering manner, initiates its own transfers! It's as if the cards are not properly identified. Weird! It's absolutely disconcerting and, the first time or so, you can't quite comprehend what came about.
Love PGS; thanks. AGS.

I just tried QC and it works fine for me. I was able to make legal moves without any problem. Note that QC has some weird rules - particularly, if the top card of the waste pile can be played to a foundation pile, it must be and the game will do it automatically. This is regardless of whether AutoPlay is on or not. I think this might be the only game with a rule like that. In any event, I wouldn't consider QC the most interesting game in the world.

There are some differences between last version an the old W95/98 version. For example in the W95/98 version of Agnes Bernauer one always can move cards freely between tableau foundations piles and tableau piles. In the WXP version this can only be done in certain cases, seemingly illogical. Error?

In Agnes Bernauer, you should be able to move cards back from the foundation piles to tableau, all except for the very first card on each foundation pile, which is fixed once played. There's no difference in this between Windows 98 and XP.

Before I discovered PGS I played about 6000 games of a game called Winspider. I even threatened to divorce my husband when he accidently deleted it. It had a 'move counter' and my only obsession then was to make as little moves as possible. Now it is mentioned here I remember how I missed this feature in the beginning of my playing PGS.

Not knowing Spanish, I had to use Babelfish to translate this, so I may not be understanding what you are saying. But if this is asking whether version 8.1.1 is a free upgrade for you, that depends on the version you originally registered. If version 7.0.1 is the version you originally registered, then yes, the latest is a free upgrade.

The full details on upgrades, what's a free upgrade and what isn't is at <http://www.goodsol.com/upgrade.html>.

The short version is that anyone who ordered Pretty Good Solitaire 2k version 6 (January 17, 2000) or later can upgrade to the current version 8.1.1 free. This will change when version 9 comes out, when people who ordered the Quest Edition version 7 (Feb 8, 2001) or later can upgrade free.

When you order instructions on how to enter your code come with your code. The email that you get after you order will explain it.

Barbara Christel Wayne wrote about playing Spider and winning all the time....how do you do that? I've played so many games and I'm ranked #101 (last I looked) and my highest score is only 39.....I know I can win a game eventually, but once you run out of so many moves you have to deal out the next, and cards get buried....

sign eme frazzled!

I've tried to find detailed descriptions of PGS on the site, but can't seem to. As a registered user of Free Cell Wizard, if and when I upgraded/bought PGS would I be getting all my Free Cell games a "second time?" i.e., are all the Free Cell games part of PGS?

Why don't you download the free version of PGS and try it out for 30 days. In the FreeCell category there are 29 different games, since the download is free you have nothing to lose and a whole lot of games to gain!!

The main description is at <http://www.goodsol.com/pgs/index.html>, which has links to lots of other info pages including the list of games and the what's new page.

>As a registered user of Free Cell Wizard, if and when I upgraded/bought PGS would I be getting all my Free Cell games a "second time?"

Yes, everything that is in FreeCell Wizard is in Pretty Good Solitaire.

By the way, you can upgrade from FreeCell Wizard to Pretty Good Solitaire for only US$15, but this offer is only available by mail (not online).

Desktop Shortcut causes game to play differently.

I just upgraded to Version 9 and tried the option of creating a desktop shortcut for Patience's Reward. I got some strange results:

The opening sounds played, but very distorted.
Game play distorted: When you are finished making all available moves in this game, you click on the stock pile and it automatically deals the cards out across the board for you to complete any moves available.

Using the desktop shortcut causes the game to play differently - you need to play each separate card whether from the stock or the waste. The waste pile is what is strange - normally, there is no waste pile.

This appears to be some sort of odd bug that I'll have to investigate and fix for the next version.

In January Oanixc and Tom were discussing teh vagaries of QC, I thought I'd take a look at the new relase to see if it worked okay for me...works okay...but lowered my percentage to 12.5 : (

I've noticed when playing Quests that only a subset of the PGS games appear as choices. Will you be modifying the code to allow a random selection of all games?

>I've noticed when playing Quests that only a subset of the PGS games appear as choices.

The vast majority of games will appear in the Quest. The only games that never appear are 3 and 4 deck games, plus a very few others.

Which games come up will also depend on your current screen resolution. If you are running in 640x480, you will be restricted to only the small table games, in 800x600 you will also then have the regular table games to choose from, and in 1024x768 you will also see the large table games.

I've kept a record of the games that I've solved. When I check the statistics for a given game it does appear but, in several games, it does not appear in the accumulated statistics! Since I just won Tower of Hanoi, that is disappointing. When I exit a session I just click on close ... should I be using the green icon? (I looked at the games won column and some are not there).

It doesn't matter how you exit, if you have statistics turned on it will appear regardless. Note that if game saving is on, the most recently played game will not appear in your statistics until it is finished (you hit new game to start a new game).

Is there a way to set up Klondike to play like the windoze solitaire game with Vegas Scoring? I.e. you only get one time through the deck, turning up one card at a time? As far as I can figure it out, your game allows infinite times throught the deck...

Thanks,
Steve

You could do that with the Wizard. You can set the deal to 1 card in Klondike, but you would get redeals. Vegas Scoring is an option in Preferences (click on the Options button on the main screen).
