How do I turn the sound down or off on the game, so I can still listen to the radio while I work?

PGMJ main screen - options - you get the General screen. at the lower right: Audio, uncheck "Play game sounds" |

Just to be complete, the general options dialog is always available from the menu, 'Options|Options...', and then as mentioned above, on the 'General' (default) tab, uncheck the 'Play game sounds' checkbox (in the 'Audio' area).
