I've won 1 game and I've lost one. I'll try the above number and see what I get. It's not a bad game. I just became obsessed with trying to win at least one game of Arsenal and haven't done so yet.

Ken, don't do that to ME! I thought 60 was about as good as I can get and was about ready to move on. If you haven't heard from me in a week:
1. Send out a search party and
2. Post the solution

but give me a while to figure out how you did it. Thanks!

Ken, just a hint. Don't try the obvious moves that come up right away. Later on in the game, the cards come up in pretty good order and you just have to switch them around and put the right ones in the empty columns. I don't know if that made sense or not. I haven't been able to sleep all night.

That made sense, Kathy, but I still can't seem to get this one. I assume that you get the open column right away but is there a card or cards that you need to spring to win this game?

Ken, See if this helps. Position 9/50/9.

4D into space then assemble 4,5,6D. Leave space open until next 5D appears. Previous efforts with "better" positioning of the spades ended in failure.

Even though I know game #13 is winnable, I've played it four times today and still can't win it. Yet the one that almost everyone had trouble with, I won at the first attempt. I can't figure it out. Suffice to say, of the new games, I haven't found one I like to play yet.

Richard, I am SOOOOO close on #16. But the problem is the sixes of spades at the beginning. If you move the one on the far left to accept the 7D early in the game, then you can't accept the second 2D if you had moved the 6S in the middle. My best score is 65 so it HAS to be winnable!

It's practically impossible with #13 anyway as there are loads of cards in the waste before the game really gets started. Try this partial.

I just had the weirdest experience! I was trying to duplicate your starting position and I am POSITIVE that I was playing #16 and the inital tableau was exactly the same but when I was going thru the stock, the aces that came up were the Aces of spades, not clubs, and the 7S never came up so I couldn't move the 6S. I hit replay and the stock was TOTALLY different, but of course I can't replicate the glitch now. Has this ever happened to you, Richard? (And I'm not counting the times you played PGS after coming back from the pub!)

Which #20 are you playing Ken? My stats have it recorded as 33. Does it look like this?

I'm getting nowhere with #13, Ken. Usually if I know a game is winnable, I can solve it, but not this time. Maybe it's because I'm sick. But I couldn't get it the other day when I was feeling okay.

Ken, it looks like you've overlooked the following post from your namesake.

"BTW, how many winners did you have between 1-50?"
"I don't want to know which ones (because that would spoil all my fun), just the # of winners".

That's why I'm keeping mine under wraps meantime.

There is a lot of strategy and tactics involved with games of this ilk Kathy. Run through this more advanced "partial" and watch how cards are constantly being taken back into the tableau to reassemble columns.

Kathy, when I post a "partial" for Ken, he saves it and then tries to win it from there by playing the rest of the game himself. If he fails to win it from there he just reopens the partial and starts the game again from there. They are intended to be a kind of base camp. You can go back there as often as you want and then try different permutations with the stock that remains. I left you just 5 cards in stock. The game is practically won. All you have to do is use the remaining cards wisely.

You will probably struggle with most of the Rough Rider games Kathy. They are rated as "10% Hard,Mostly skill" for good reason. You have to be able to identify positions where "worrying back" is essential. You need to do it a lot to win the majority of them.
A fair bit of the work has been done prior to the following "partial". Think about your first move very carefully.

Well done Ken! Your determination is admirable.
Here are some more winning numbers for anyone who wants.
50,56,58,61,71,72,74,87 and 93. There may be an odd winnable number that I've failed with, but I doubt it. I've replayed some of them a few times to try and avoid that.
Missing you already.
There is some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that I'll not be playing PGS for a while. The good news, for me, is that we have to go down to Edinburgh for a week. We're leaving tomorrow. (One of those last minute decisions).

I won't give up, Ken, although I'm not doing well at all. At least I know some winning numbers now. I'll have more time to play too because I'm still feeling weak and so I'll be staying home from the senior center more in the next couple of weeks.

Liz has a brother in the Edinburgh area. Circumstances (including the weather) will dictate the duration of our visit. A week-ish. We are both in our 60's so we intend making the most of our mobility whilst we still have it.
To a fair degree, tactics dictate how much success you will have with Rough Rider. EVERY time you get a column clear you must look and see if there is something to be gained by "worrying back".
You have just cleared a column. The top card of the waste pile is the KH. In the tableau you have a column of hearts headed by the QH. Let's say QH-4H. You have an entire suit of hearts already on the foundations. From there you take the KH down into the empty column, together with the QH etc down to the 4H. The hearts in the foundations are now just the A,2,3. Now you can put the 4H-QH up onto them together with the KH that was on the top of the waste.
Another example would be if you had two columns of clubs. One 3-8, the other 9-K. You get an empty column. You have clubs on the foundation right up to the king. You move them off of the foundations right down to the 3C. Now you can now put up both of the broken columns of clubs. So instead of having one cleared column, you now have two.

Kathy....if you open the partial I uploaded called "Tactics", you will see similar moves to the ones I explained to you above. In a nutshell you take cards down off of the foundations into an empty column so that you can instantly put up a superior but very similar selection. That's about as clear as I can make it.
Ken, 13,15,16,23,27,29,31,32,35,38,41,45,46 and 50 are ALL I have won. (apart from the higher numbers I have mentioned above). I'll need to pull my socks up.

Yes. I tried backing up slowly when I opened the solution but still couldn't get it. That's why I thought if I had the first few moves, I would at least know I was going in the right direction. Otherwise, I would have to write down every move made from last to first, and I can't write well because of a nerve problem in my hands. Never mind. It doesn't matter anymore. Failing to spot just one move can make all the difference between winning and losing them Ken. I didn't spend much time playing any of them.Your persistance paid off. Well done young un.
Here are my solutions to the ones you missed.

Ken, what are your top scores for those neither of us won? Maybe we can get another one or two. I need a break from Block! Block is enough to drive a bloke off his block.

For #55, I got 50.
For #59, I got 53.
For #64, I got 53 also.
Do you have any other ones where you scored over 50?

Even though we have mined (appropriate, don't you think?) the first 50 numbers pretty well, let me throw these #'s out there.

For #12, I got 53.
For #20, I got 66.
For #24, I got 58.
For #39, I got 52.
For #48, I got 50.

Let me know if you make any progress on these #'s.

51 scored 50
100 scored 55
Improved your score for #24 by one magnificent point. Will work on the others.

Can't get near your score for #20 Ken. Post your solution and I'll have another go. I must be running in the same groove with it all the time.

Richard, I posted it back on Sep 4th. I think that the brain trust of you, me, and Trisha decided it was a loser.

OK, perhaps we should just stick to that. I've matched your scores with most of the others, but have only bettered one, #24 by one point. You've done extremely well.

No great scores at all with #94 Ken. The deal looks good but the conflict is caused by the 2S. Refusing the first one gets you right into the cards and loads of them fly up. Later you rue the absence of the two. However taking it the first time delays getting amongst the cards and getting a column empty as quickly. My scores must only be in the forties I'd think, I'm undoing and redoing all the time. If you have a decent partial I'd be happy to experiment with it.

I'm practically certain #100 is winnable. Just scored 58 with a single attempt.
It's 1am. Time for some shut eye.

I've not got much time on my hands for PGS just now Ken. What I do have has been taken up by Block. It's become an obsession.
My subconscious must have been working overtime during the night, as I've wakened up with an idea that could potentially make me money. I'll be doing a lot of number crunching and extracting data from the web before I can say whether it is viable or not. PGS will be relegated meantime.

Sods Law Ken, the very day I wanted my PC to behave is the very day it has chosen not to. It was working fine at 1am when I switched it off, but later on the same morning it cannot open Windows Mail. My PC guy is on holiday until Tuesday, and System Restore couldn't help me either. Computers could be the biggest source of stress in our lives.
My project with have to be shelved meantime.

Re #100 I am losing confidence that even a few points more may not be possible. Thoughts?

It's not the PC Markus. Some update must have corrupted or changed a DLL file required for emails.

All attempts at a home fix have failed. Two phone "fixes" with my IT man have also failed. He's just got back from holiday with food poisoning so won't be able to visit me for several days.
Googling the problem suggests loads of different fixes. Most involve buying a Registry Scanner. No ta. Got one. It can't fix it. System Restore refuses to get out of its bed. Thanks for that too Mr.G. Go count your money!
I'll get it fixed anon. Until then this is it.

Richard, if it's going to take a long time, you can always get a free Yahoo email account. I have one just in case I don't want to use my Comcast email.

Mike, how is your dizziness problem? Any idea yet what's causing it?
