Anyone interested in watching these championships can do so at
http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/worlds/2010/live/

Live streaming worldwide. 200 Pipe Bands from all across the world. The favourites must be the magnificent Simon Fraser University from Canada, last year's winners, but it would be nice if another band lifted the top honours this time.

Richard, a friend of mine has a brother who competes every year in the championships. His last name is Brown. Is that Scottish?

Not to the best of my knowledge Kathy. There are compeditors from many nationalities. I'm not sure if the Pakistani pipe band will be here, given the extent of the flooding at home.

I didn't understand about the Pakistanti pipe band and the flooding. Did I miss something?

Heavy rains in Pakistan. Lots of flooding. It might be more important for the pipe band to stay home. Or they might not be able to assemble the players or get out of an airport.

Just in case you think we are joking.

I didn't know they'd been refused entry.

So the Pakistanis come to the UK with one hundred people and leave with fifty. And they all moved in next door to Richard. I learn a lot from you. Hope you learn to like Pakistani food.

I don't understand this entire conversation. I must be delirious from the heat (the heat index has been around 105 degrees for days). If the Pakistanis were denied entry to the UK, how did they end up next door to Richard? Maybe it's time for bed. One of you can explain this to me in the morning.

An Irish band won it this year. They wore plain green kilts.

Who knows? They're Irish. There was a band from Germany in the competition too! You could ask them.

Yes Mike. I watched them. I was surprised that Simon Fraser could only manage 3rd this time. The were actually announced as being 4th but this was later corrected.

I learned some more from watching this year. It has to do with the entrance and how the pipes sound. Also the music. The band plays a march. Darn I forget the next part. Then a reel. And the tempo they play at makes a difference.

They all sound pretty much the same to me. What the judges are listening for are variations so minimal that probably only a Pipes instructor would even notice them. The commentator mentioned that the sun coming out whilst a band was playing could totally change the pitch of the chanters and make them turn shrill. Pity the poor guys trying to qualify last year with rain running down them.

Why a French flag at Glasgow Pipe bands Championship?
As far as I know there was only a Breton Pipe band participating, not a French one...

Doesn't Glasgow City or the Royal Scottish Pipe band association own a Breton flag?

It may be a good idea for next year that the Breton pipe bands invited offer a «Gwen ha Du» to the City of Glasgow and to the Pipe band association!

Kind regards

Maryvonne Cadiou from Brittany

Welcome Maryvonne. I will take a guess at why the French flag was flown. Since the Championship is billed as an International competion. They would fly the French flag. But I feel you are correct. If a band is participating their individual flag should be presented somewhere. Now I have to look up what the Brittany flag looks like. I have been there. But don't remember seeing a flag. Hope you continue to add to our little discussions.
