I think that you are describing background tiling, which is usually not ideal for pictures.
When you change to a scenic background, you probably want to select 'Stretched Image' (not 'Tiled Image') so the picture is stretched to the size of the screen (rather than repeated).

This could happen if you (or somebody) changed your options, or if the screen resolution is different to what you previously used.
To adjust background options for a game, select 'Options|Options...' from the menu, then click on the 'Background' tab. (You can also use the 'Options' button from the game list to alter the default background for all games.)
