Since this is the non sequitur thread, let me post my query here. I watched this British movie last night, Cashback (good movie but a little bizarre), and when two people met they said what sounds like "watcher". I assume it is some sort of British greeting, but are they really saying "watcher" and how did this greeting come about?

I'd say it derived from Londoners and the way they mispronounce things....or fings as they would say. You get one, two, free, four, for example. Similarly "what" would be "wot". Therefore "what are you doing?" would land up as "wot yer" up to?, or even "wotcher" up to? I doubt if you'd hear it elsewhere.
I watched The Matrix Reloaded" last night and you call "Cashback" bizarre,ha!

Non sequitur (nahn sek [as in heck]-kwit-her) n. Latin for "it does not follow." The term usually means that a conclusion does not logically follow from the facts or law.

Law_n. The collection of rules imposed by authority.

au·thor·i·ty (-thôr-t, -thr-, ô-thôr-, ô-thr-),n. The power to enforce laws, exact obedience, command, determine, or judge.

com·mand (k-mnd),v. To direct with authority; give orders to.

Ken, you always express an interest in Britain's Got Talent and X Factor. I've been following America's Got Talent this year and think that you guys got it spot on with your top five. There is no way on earth that I'd have put the five finalists into the winning order though. I was disappointed when Mike got knocked out. For months he's been telling us he's been playing golf, whilst he was secretly rehearsing with the rest of the Tapping Dads.
BTW, Simon Fraser University from Canada lifted the top award at the Pipe Band Championships. They deserved to win.

It's always Liz who puts it on and I just assumed we were talking about 2009. No wonder Mike looked fresher and younger.

We were sitting in the car....soaked to the skin. There was nowhere to shelter except a very long tent which was the bar. You'd have thought that the city licensing authority would have had the common sense to grant them a special licence to open it when the event opened.....but no! Everyone who was there early just had to stand around and get drenched. The seats were all soaking too, so if you'd nothing to dry them off with you were stuffed. We were not the only people who left within the first hour. Poorly organised. Done on the cheap. Many people had their days ruined, and then went home and saw how the weather had changed a couple of hours later. It was a disgrace that some competitors had to perform in torrential rain, whilst others had sunshine. We'll be back next year..... dressed like trawler-men if need be.

I was hoping you were going to have a good day and get lots of pictures. Oh well. Next year. Or perhaps it is better to watch on the telly. I still have to find some of the other performances on the internet. They had good links yesterday on the World site. But they are gone today. Not happy that we both had lousy weekends.

I am telepathically transmitting a powerful rendition of "I will survive" to you Mike. What's that American saying that covers horrible events? "It happens"....something like that.
We are heading to Strathdon next weekend to witness the Men of Lonach marching in full Highland dress, armed with pikes and Lochaber battleaxes. They start their march at 8am and make essential fuelling stops (for a wee dram) at several houses en route. If anyone turned up at your door with a battleaxe (btw, how IS Debbie?) you'd give them a whisky wouldn't you? This in the only procession of its kind in the world, now in its 167th year, (albeit with different participants).

Of more interest to the rest of the world is that England are in the same group as USA in the World Cup. They are talking about winning it already. The more cynical of us have decided to run a sweepstake to see how many times the dreaded cliche "1966" will be mentioned in our TV coverage.

The Tostito Bowl!?!? Another new one on me Mike. This appears to be one of a good handful of bowls that you guys have. Although the spelling of the name would suggest differently, only men can compete. It derives its name from from the Netherlands too. Apparently a great team called the Testosterones used to hang out there. Am I right?

Michael is out of surgery. The doctors are patting themselves on the back for the way it turned out. I came home to let the dogs out. But will be going back in a few minutes. He should be in his room when I get there. Hopefully he will be in hospital just one night. And then it is recovery time. His mouth is wired so we will have to see how well he can get food in through the straw. Vegematic time. All liquid. I am hoping for the best. More later.

All is still going well. Michael is in some pain when he move his head. But he can get comfortable again. He is under a pretty strong pain medicine. He hits a button and out it comes. Tomorrow will tell more about how he will do. He did not have as much swelling as we thought. But he is still puffy. They did a lot of work. I am sure that when he figures out how to take in liquids. He will may have a little be/er. But he is not suppose to have much alchohol. It causes problems. I can't explain it exactly. It softens the tissue in his mouth somehow. More tomorrow.

Surely you would Pine for a Christmas tree Mike.

Warmer clothes will be essential. We were at minus seven last night. It barely reached zero throughout the day. It's dark before 4pm. Looks like the publican will be seeing more of us than normal.

I first became of Dr. Who in the Tom Baker years. We got them here about two years or so after he started. The local station then started them from the beginning the first Dr and then to Jon Pertwee. I have not been able to get into the new ones. I don't know why. But I have seen most of the episodes. New ones start next week. I sure hope Ken finds a girlfriend soon. Of course she will need a bicycle and a christmas tree. I would not even go outside in weather less than 40 degrees F.

Hi
Another Dr Who fan here

I can remember watching the first episode in November 1963 as an 8 year old and have been hooked ever since.
I get the DVDs when they are issued.
There has been a search for the missing 108 episodes for a number of years but it is looking unlikely that these will be found.
I often listen to audio versions when playing solitaire

Paul. I was watching the special series about Monty Python. They said that video tapes were often erased and re-used. Now I think that early Doctors were on film so that should not have been a problem. But the BBC was also lax in saving things in a library. Actually you probably know more about all this than I. Anyway those episodes are no doubt lost.
Put it in the pre-nup Ken. No relatives.
One more note to those watching. I love my wife and her family very much. But I do reserve the right to poke fun at them. Hope your Holiday shopping is going well.

One of our cats is named after a Doctor Who companion.

Since every one of our cats has a game in Pretty Good Solitaire named after them, that means that there is a game in Pretty Good Solitaire that is indirectly named after a Doctor Who companion.

Can you figure out which game it is?

We are in complete agreement with you there Mike; we reserve the right to poke fun at your relatives too.
If you are a Monty Python fan I would nominate this as the most hilarious clip ever.

Heard on TV recently........."So many cats; so few recipes."... I've never been a Dr.Who fan so I won't even hazard a guess as to the cat's name. In some corners of the world it could be "Take Away". (Thankfully not the corners we frequent).

Hi
I would suggest Martha from 18 episodes and at a push you could probably say Adelaide ( The waters of Mars)

Mike This is a good link about the missing episodes

It's amazing where these threads go. The waters of Mars has a unique link with Bennachie next to our town of Inverurie. A rare mineral called Macaulayite can be found nowhere else on Earth. Scientists believe it is this that gives Mars its red colouration and practically proves the existance of water on that planet because the mineral always contains it.
We're off tomorrow morning so you will have peace for about a week.

Ooops. I forgot. Thanks Paul. It was very informative. And along the lines of what I thought.

This is also off topic but this has been driving me mad all over Christmas and no near getting the solution if there is one without going mad

Protagoras agreed to teach Euathlus law for a fee which was payable when the pupil won his first case
After the course Euathlus did not take part in any lawsuits, and the impatient Protagoras sued for his fee. he reasoned that if he won Euathlus would be obliged by the court to pay his fee, if he lost Euathlus would have won the case and so be contractually bound to pay.
Euathlus reasoned that if Protagorus won he would not be bound to pay, for he did not have to pay until he won a case; if Protagorus lost, the court would have decided he did not have to pay.

Who is right?

Paul

And I was worried all over Christmas if I should eat just one more cookie. Great minds think alike.

Paul, that's assuming Euathlus would defend himself. Isn't there a saying that says, "A lawyer that defends himself has a fool for a client"? Here's another one for you: A barber says that I only shave men that don't shave themselves. Who shaves the barber?

Euathlus promised to pay when he won his first case. Unless he promised to actually take a case he was under no obligation ever to pay up.

Richard. Have you received any of my video emails lately? I also think you and Paul may get nominated for our Supreme Court.

Yes Mike....two of. Will open them later tonight when Liz is through watching TV. My emails were not showing up in date order. That's why I didn't see them. Have fixed that little nuisance.
I doubt if Paul or myself would get anywhere near your Supreme Court. If it's anything like ours, having a decent quota of common sense would disqualify us. Also, (and I doubt if anyone has ever noticed), I am not always 100% politically correct.

What are you grousing about now Mike? The man delivered. Have a look in your pockets. All you've got left IS change, and that's pretty real. Besides, you'd not not be able to sleep at nights knowing that all your illegals weren't getting the very best in health care, would you? If they were taxpayers they WOULD chip in. That's what Obama should tackle next; jobs for everyone. And an "open door" policy on immigration would be a vote winner................(in Mexico if nowhere else).

The Doberman fills the same duties as the mule. Ken. You are treading on thin ice. Actually it's Richard who has to watch out for the ice right now. So you might be one step away from the swamp.

Thanks for your concern. It was a good bit warmer today Mike. It reached +1 this afternoon when we were out. Ricky Tomlinson's catch phrase would sum up my current opinion regarding global warming. It's been snowing for the last hour or so.
