The football World Cup is fast approaching. (Yeah we know that you guys call it Soccer).
A shop in Aberdeen is now selling sweatshirts and T-shirts with the A.B.E.logo. These show the team you will be supporting throughout the competition. Purchasers of these shirts will be supporting Anybody But England !
Sarcasm is alive and well in the Granite City.

It's only supposed to be a bit of fun Paul. Some entrepreneur has seen an opportunity to make some money. The shop manager is English and he thought is was highly amusing that they had had a warning from the police for displaying them in their window. "Even the English people who come into the store think it's a laugh and just a bit of tongue-in-cheek football banter".
Only a tiny percentage of Scots will buy them. There are bigots/racists on both sides of the border. You will probably have seen "We Hate Man U." merchandise.

I just hope we can get to Canada again in the Olympic finals. Canada made Russia look bad today. But the finals may be a different story. I hope not. As to the World Cup. It would be nice to get in the finals for the US. But I know so little about Football/Soccer. That I am no help.

You just had to bring this up again. I thought the World Cup battle had died off. Perhaps Ken (either one) will know who is on the US side. I don't. So all I have to do is join a Scottish based team and I can play on their Cup team? Interesting. At least in Hockey you really have to be a citizen of the country. Go Estonia!

Now hang on there a minute Mike. Just because your wife is away to a wedding doesn't automatically mean that you can have an opinion, does it?

The World Cup is just four weeks away now. Our tellies will be awash with it as each and every game is screened. An endless procession of experts will enlighten us with their pre-match analysis and then eat humble pie in the inevitable post mortems that will ensue. The news and current affairs programmes will be full of it. Every pub will be screening the games too. There will be no escape. Heaven help us.
Incidentally, the list on the T-Shirt is remarkably unbiased. Of the 14 players mentioned, 50% are English.

Well for one thing my brief time of being on my own is over. Everyone is home safe. BTW a note for the Kens. On the way to the Jacksonville airport my son spied a very large anaconda. Looks like they are now firmly a part of the community. Now for the Cup. All most of the folks around here will care about is how Mexico is doing. I may watch a little.

Sorry your vacation is at an end Mike.
We used to sell snakes many years ago, including a few anacondas. Other shops did too. It was not unusual for us to get called out to go and uplift a snake from someone's garden etc. Either they would escape or people would simply let them free. At least our winters would be too cold for them to survive.
It is widely acknowledged that there are numerous big cats wandering around in the U.K. Very recently a professor guy had a close encounter with a female lion. He said it ran away. I'd not have noticed that as I'd have been running in the opposite direction.
Mexico eh? Alternatively known as Team California no doubt. They are in with a chance of getting into the next round.

Team California. Very true. Every win will be celebrated with large parades. A loss is very serious. Hopefully it won't happen on a bad call.
I have stumbled upon to many snakes in my time. All kinds. Most of the rattlesnakes have already been given the last rites thank goodness. But I have had encounters with live ones. I don't think I would like to meet up with a anaconda though. It could swallow even me.

There are only three snakes indigenous to the Uk. Of those only the Adder is venomous. Even that is relatively harmless as it is "rear fanged" unlike your Rattlers and most other venomous snakes that have fangs at the front of their mouths. I have never seen a snake in the wild. Surely they are entitled to their own habitat and shouldn't be persecuted. There are some humans that I'd not afford the same courtesy. We could compile lists. See if we get any matches.

My list would be too long. Unfortunatly I have had to do away with two rattlers myself. One was in my friends garage and it was only luck that I didn't get bit. The others I have seen while playing golf or fishing or out in the desert and I have been very happy to leave them alone. Other snakes I have run into. King Snakes. Albino King snakes. Which are very strange to see. And numerous kinds of garter and striped racers. But I have never run across a coral snake or it's mimic. Which name escapes me at the moment.

There are circumstances when it must be necessary to kill venomous snakes Mike.
There are many beautiful snakes. The ones you forgot the name of are my favourites, the Milk Snakes. Liz and I had a beautiful pair for several years, Honduran Milk Snakes. The female laid eggs fairly often and we did incubate some. The young are almost impossible to feed though.

"I have never seen a snake in the wild."

The question is WHY? Who fears most the snake or you Richard?

BTW we have had today a totally mild (?) evening and i got stuck with my neighbour and 5 8eers and my self made cherry liquor.

It has always been my opinion that the snake fears anything larger than itself. Now a 20ft Anaconda probably fears nothing. Most of us are happy to leave wild critters to themselves. But sometimes you have no choice. A rattlesnake hiding under boxes in a garage is dangerous. If I could figure anyway to get it back in the wild safely I would. If I am in their territory then they will be left alone.
Now back to the World Cup. I am picking Brazil. Why because they win a lot. And that is the lenght of my knowledge. Is Pele still part of the team? Beckham can be on my team. (Victoria of course)

Snakes are pretty uncommon in the UK. The Smooth Snake is not found in Scotland at all. Grass Snakes are absent in large parts of Scotland and Adders are not present everywhere either. The chances of seeing any are slim as they are very secretive by nature. They can easily hide amongst the heather etc. An interesting fact for you.....75% of the world's heather is found in the U.K. It is much rarer than rain forest.
I'm certainly not scared of snakes. I've handled a 1000+. The biggest one was about 3 metres long and about as thick as a woman's thigh. It ate whole rabbits. Dead ones Kathy. In fact none of our snakes got live food.
It was mild here today too Markus. About 14°C. We would tend to say home made cherry liquor, or home brewed if it was 8eer.

American Football is played in the USA and practically nowhere else. Football as I have pointed out in several languages is played in every corner of the planet. It is not called "The Beautiful Game" for nothing. Just because Americans have chosen to call it soccer will never change the fact that it is called Football, a game played with a ball and the feet. Go figure. The USA are playing in the FIFA World Cup in a couple of days time. The second F stands for Football. There is no S in the name.
You stated quite correctly that football is much more interesting. The vast majority of people in the world totally agree with you.

Controversy already. Without a ball having been kicked. Yeah!

"Without a ball having been kicked. Yeah!"

Richard, that's not quite correct. Sometimes, they treat the "egg" also with the foot to get a additional point or doing a field-goal (3 points). That happens maximum 10 times a game in a normal game. Mostly about just 5 times.

Kathy. Eight o"clock tonight on NBC. We will see if the Hawks can win the Stanley Cup.And I agree with Kathy. American football is much more interesting to watch. Everytime the ball is put into play something can happen. In soccer/football you just have a bunch of guys whining and crying ever time they are touched. And then you have the multiple cheap shots. I know there might be nuiances in the game that I may miss. But generally it can be a snoozer.

A few years ago one of our TV channels put on American Football every week. It was so unpopular that it had to be dropped.

I missed the game, Mike. Didn't check the forum after 5:00 CST. I bet Chicago must have went wild. Portage, Indiana, where I live, is considered a suburb of Chicago, and so it is our team too. Now, if we could just get the Cubs going, but that's the impossible dream.

American Football is a lot like Bullfighting. It's hardly caught on anywhere except where it originated. Nor is it likely to.
Given your changing population, how long do you think it will be before California gets its first bullring? (Arnold has been talking bull for some time now).

The day that any state gets a bullring is the day I'll renounce my US citizenship. But I don't think it could ever happen here. We've got very powerful animal rights groups. When I was young, my father started watching a bullfight on the TV. I started crying, and even he had to turn it off.

Bullfighting has been one of the most popular sports in Mexico for over 400 years. Given that some of your southern states are getting flooded with Mexicans to such an extent that council meetings are conducted in Spanish, it seems likely that they will foist this upon you under "discrimination" or "racial intolerance" legislation. Something akin to the relentless spread of mosques into Christian countries.
How long before you get your first Spanish president too? You've already got a Kenyan one.

Do you really think that a country (the US) that makes cockfighting illegal is going to legalize bullfighting? I've been to Mexico. I was there for about 10 minutes before I made my husband take me back home. They can keep they're customs, but they can't bring them here.

It seems to me that we said much the same about mosques and burkas. Now they are everywhere. It appears to me that we always let these people have their own way simply to keep the peace. It's not impossible that California or some other state will demand independence from the USA.
I'd hate to be alive 100 years from now. It's going to be a horrible new world.

A footballing feast. I'll not be around to take a few free kicks at all any sundry. I'll have to leave that to you and Mike, Ken. The balls are in your non-tennis court. I was merely pointing out that you should not believe everything you see of hear even if does appear to come from a source you trust, in this case Rome Reports. It will be interesting to see how accurately they report the abuse problem. It gives a whole new meaning to "suffer little children" etc.

We've been to Mull a couple of times previously Mike. The last time we took another ferry from there across to Iona. I was surprised that there is a pub on that tiny island.
On our Orkney trip we took an additional ferry from there onto Rousay. A local described it to me as "A great place. Two pub5 and nae polis".

I have only one thing to say and then no more. Sexual abuse occurs in every facet of society, including all religious and secular organizations. The Catholic Church doesn't ho/d a patent on it.

My final word too. Sexual abuse has been rife amongst priests in all corners of the world since further back than I can remember. It's been swept under the carpet for decades and the perpetrators allowed to get off Scot free. Victims are no longer prepared to tolerate it so the church has finally been forced into reluctant action. What kind of people did they think they were going to recruit when celibacy is mandatory? Their views on contraception are equally ridiculous.

If celibacy was the problem, how do you explain the abuse of Protestant ministers which is higher than priests? Richard, you frighten me in your seemingly hatred of the Church. Will we eventually be treated as the Jews were by the Nazi's? Just a thought. You can disagree over our views on contraception, but to call them ridiculous is not right. Maybe if you knew the reason for our views, you would understand. I respect you and think you are a fair person. Why not try and see both sides of the issue and then make up your mind?

I didn't even mention the Catholic church Kathy. I have no doubt that abuse of this nature is not unique to them. In denominations that do not demand celibacy it would be interesting to know what percentage of the abusers were married (to a person of the opposite seks).
I do not hate the church. I gave practically everything in my mother's house to them. I hate many of the people they employ. Ministers and/or priests are preying on the vulnerable in a premeditated manner. Emotionally disturbed people should be able to trust them implicitly, but they can't.
As regards contraception, what possible reason can the church have for denying that choice to people in third world countries who can hardly feed themselves far less another baby?

England 1 USA 1. Most of the play was by the English. US was playing defense all the way through the second half. (which was all I watched) Lots of players standing around. Not much movement to get into the open. The foul calls all seemed legit to me. Still. A lot of crying. A player gets nicked on the ankle and starts waving his hands around and yelling at the other player. The same player will then kick an opponent in the groin. (sorry Kathy) and wonder why everyone is upset. That's football/soccer to me.

Well well! And well done. The USA played well enough, against a team that fancied their chances of winning the competition. On this evidence they have no chance.
The only hand waving that I saw was from players to the ref, asking why there was no foul given. Some players feign injury in an attempt to get opponents sent off. This is becoming less frequent as they themselves are often sent off for trying this "professional foul". Many players get very seriously injured every season. One foul can cause permanent damage. More than a few have been killed.
I was surprised to see that one of your substitutes was born in Aberdeen to Scottish/English parents.

Rooney was the most visible in the hand waving department in what I saw. And he did his own share of hard play. It will get worse as the games go along. For all teams. But that is the way it goes. We call the "professional foul" here as "diving". It happens mostly in hockey. But basket/ball is another sport where it happens. Often called a "flop" too. Having the Scotsman may be a good omen.

There are several Professional Fouls. "Diving" is when a player has been fouled and he dives forward into the penalty box when the foul has happened outside. Getting a penalty is usually a massive advantage. It's become rarer because refs have finally cottoned on to it. With so many cameras focussed on the action all the time it is becoming difficult to get off with this kind of thing. Players like Thierry Henry have been branded as cheats for cynical fouls. They all know that they may fool the ref but they can't fool the cameras.

I don't know if you saw the game between Germany and Serbia. All said after the game, that it was a very fair game (also the Serbia players didn't understand the yellow-red-card for Klose). Just 26 fouls, BUT 9 yellow cards. When you have a closer look onto the referees in this World Cup, then i must say, i didn't see so far one, that he is right to be at work in South Africa. Sometimes it is very odd what say see. That makes no fun watching games.

BUT maybe i am one week free of this problem, because i am from tomorrow on for one week on vacation in Bulgaria. On the other side, i am sure they will have TV-s or big screens and they surely will show every game. But it is much more relaxing to watch a game from the pool sight with a cocktail (or two or three or...) in your hand.

When I see the whole play from the beginning. I see a push off from the goal scorer. Which as I said was very minor. Read VERY. There was also an American player holding onto a Slovenian player. But there were also two Slovenians who had US players well wrapped up. So the goal should have counted. We will never know what the Referee saw or thought he saw. Have fun in Bulgaria.

Who would have put money on USA winning their group? I thought they could well get second spot, but FIRST????
I've seen all their games and they played well in every one of them. They were ROBBED more than once, but these things have a habit of leveling themselves out. Maybe their next opponents will have a good goal disallowed.
I was happy that France got knocked out. They STOLE Ireland's place.
No input from Paul or Trisha!!! Strange! I saw two of the England games in separate pubz. Almost everyone was rooting for them. They were playing so far beneath what they are capable of it was like watching Scotland in disguise.

Thanks Mike, we had a great time. We had only intended spending about 5 days on Mull and going home for my dental appointment, but the weather was so good that I phoned and cancelled it. We spent a day on Ardnamurchan when we got off Mull and then on to the World Heritage site at New Lanark before spending the rest at our favourite haunt of Dirleton. Liz had an exceptionally lazy day when we took the train into Edinburgh and visited the Royal Yacht Britannia and then Hollyrood Palace. We could quite easily have stayed away for another week.

Glad you brought the vuvuzela subject up. I firmly believe that these should be inserted in such a manner that only an inch or so protrudes. They are an abominable racket and have ruined this World Cup. Nothing can equal tens of thousands of fans singing their own team's anthems. Watch this and tell me I'm wrong.

Hi Ken, Glad that you are enjoying some of the football. Cop a load of this............

After correctly forecasting the 4-0 Germany score I predicted that England and Germany would both qualify and meet in the second round. I still fancy Germany to win, but England were quite impressive in their final game, so a score of 2:1 in favour of Germany may be nearer.
I was sitting in the boozer at Dirleton with a good friend of mine watching the last England game. He had his red England top on. I had to get to the bar two hours earlier than normal to give him my support. The sacrifices I make for my friends!!!!

No German doubt that we will win the game against England. If in normal time or after penalties does not matter. They all believe that history will repeat. That means bad signs for England. I am not so sure. Only when Germany can score an early goal it will be quite sure that they will win.

I agree Markus. I'd not bet any money on the outcome. A single piece of good/bad luck could swing the result in either direction.
But if it is a draw then Germany are almost certain to win the penalty shoot-out.

The article appears to have been thought up just to get some free publicity Kathy. The octopus maybe just preferred the colour of one of the flags. I'd like to see how it would cope with a drawn game. The octopus lives in Germany, so it would be reasonable to think that whoever put the food in the boxes would put its favourite food in the box he/she wanted to be chosen.
They should have done it with a similar sea creature so that they could have said that they were Squids in after backing all the predictions.

The goalkeeper is only allowed to handle the ball within his own goal area, otherwise it is a foul. The only time you are liable to see a goalie in the opposition half is in the dying minutes when a single goal would change the result. If he handled the ball in these circumstances he would probably be sent off for making a professional foul.

The Germany v England match has not kicked off yet but my back is up already!
"Now the National Anthem of England" came over the tannoys, followed by a rousing rendition of "God Save The Queen". It took decades to educate the England fans not to use the Union Jack as the England flag. How long will it take them to stop using the British National Anthem?

I actually felt sorry for the England fans who'd traveled all the way to South Africa. Fabbio Crapello should reimburse each and every one of them after his team's dreadful display against Germany,(in particular).
It came as a relief that their disallowed goal was not the whole reason they lost. With all the technology at the match it should have been automatic that the decision was reviewed immediately. Disgraceful!

But as you said, maximum 25 minutes of played a little better wasn't good enough for us and i don't think, that the not given 2:2 would have made England a winner. BTW Capello said in an interview after the match, that his team has made a good game. Richard, please tell me, what game did he watch?
And i was nearly right with my 4 goals from Germans in your 3:1 forecast: it would have been our goalkeeper who didn't look well by the 2:1 .
Who will be the next? Argentina or Mexico?

I must take a different approach here Richard. Public funds are not given out like they once were for sporting events. That's one reason why Los Angeles cannot get an (American) Football team. The Olympics that have been hosted here have been privately funded. Now that does not mean that the government in their wisdom :-) could not try to do it. But it is against the peoples wishes. Also remember that Soccer/football is not that popular here. It was interesting to me that there were not that many US players with Latin names. I am guessing that not enough Hispanics are able to get into College programs and the fact that we have no semi-professional or amatuer leagues to bring them out. Or very very few anyway.

One other thought. It would still cost the federal, state and city money in the end for extra protection. So who knows how much public money would be spent. But most of the cost would have to come from the private sector

I misunderstood you, Richard. I thought you meant that we, the tax payers, have a lot of money. Actually, most of us now with this recession are hardly making ends meet. The rich in the US only constitute 10%. Right now, we're mostly lower middle class, with a lot of us unemployed. So we can't afford it. And I don't know if it's made public or not, but there are more and more poor people in the US every day.

It's the politicians who think that the public are awash with money, some kind of bottomless pit, not me. They play games of one-upmanship with politicians from other countries. Coming out on top is all that matters, beating the others. Then they'll think about how they are going to raise the money.
The USA might fare better than many other countries that have hosted the games. You definitely have more than enough stadiums. No need to built more you'd think. The biggest outlay would be with security. Thousands of foreigners arriving in your country would be ideal cover for terrorists and illegals.

Are there any countries anywhere where the economy is not in trouble at this point in time? I'm sure you know the US has more than a trillion dollar debt, and I hear the global economy is bad. I was just wondering if any country knew how to manage better than the rest of us.

I think that every country in the "developed world" is in the same boat. The knock on effect is that they spend less money and this affects "third world" countries too.

Our printing press for making money works better than any other countries. And our government is really good at spending more than they have. But we could make a list of other countries that do a good job of spending too.

The USA may be in a relatively better position than you think. The late news programme I watched tonight is forecasting another huge financial meltdown encompassing most of the Euro Zone banks including Germany. More than half of the German population want to ditch the Euro and return to the Deutschmark. The trouble is that they are owed so much money by other EEC countries that doing so would be a disaster for them too. Troubled times ahead. (Except for the fat cats).

Here is the sport's headline of the decade from one of the English newspapers today. Andy Murray, "Flower of England". You couldn't make it up.

Wouldn't the meltdown you're talking about affect the US? I think we're in a very precarious position too, and our President is only making it worse. We're in for another recession, and we haven't even gotten out of the present one.

A tragic ending for Ghana Mike. Yet again it has been demonstrated that cheating can win a game. What message has this sent out to everybody who plays football/soccer? The guy who got sent off for blocking a certain goal is now a hero in Uruguay. The guy who missed the last minute penalty will have nightmares about it for ever. The goal should have been awarded.

Richard. I really don't think the guy from Uraguay should be called for cheating. It was a reaction to a hard shot. I doubt he had time to think. Of course he should have taken it in the head or face. Perhaps a rule change is in order. Indeed a lot of rule changes.

No, Mike, it was clearly no reaction. He wanted to play the ball with the hands for not to get the goal.

Richard, the Ghana player maybe will have nightmares, but the African fans are more mad. He has to fear for his life. When i remember right, then one African player (don't ask from which country) cannot play anymore football, because of fans who injured him so badly because of a game he wasn't playing well and the team didn't win because of that.

The Netherlands should make short work of Uruguay Markus,(0:2)maybe. Germany should beat Spain (3:1) perhaps. But the final!!! That will be trickier to predict.

Or was it in response to my one little comment on someone boring a certain doctor to death. :-) I am surprised there was no comment in here about the Spain/Paraguay match. Another strange one. I am playing PGS and 101. I had another case of somebody posting a bunch of hands to go into #1 in Agnes Bernauer. With a winning percentage of 26.4% to my 65%. I just could not stand it. One myth I think should be put to rest. He did not drink a lot. The rumor game from a newspaper man who got it from another officer who Grant had to reprimand. And who, like some newspaper men today, ran the story. All through the civil was the northern newspapers did not exactly report the truth on lots of things. In fact they were were rather negative. And the southern ones overplayed every southern victory and called losses wins. More later.

I didn't watch the Spain match Mike, hence the lack of comments. No, I rarely go to the pub at weekends, or evenings come to that, except when we're away. Your comment was accepted in the manner it was given. BTW, do YOU have any pink pants?
You'll never learn with those stats. There are people out there who will stoop to anything to top a table, but to do it with a pathetic percentage is bewildering. "LOOK AT ME! See how STUPID I am?". I'm playing Madame at the moment. Un oiseau in the hand is worth two of George Bush.
Apart from that WE are decorating. Suggestions for Thomas for words that should be banned would be, DIY, Gloss paint. emulsion paint, vinyl silk paint and magenta. How is it possible to send a woman out for a specific colour of paint and for her to come home with something totally different. Do they just like the sound of the word magenta? And why did she have to open it and have a look at it when she got home? You open it, you have to keep it. The result is that the woodwork will be practically the same colour as the wallpaper we bought for the bedroom a few months ago. It's still lying in the cupboard. Never mind, I'm sure WE will think of something we can do with it. Now we need new paper. Thank God I have the dentist tomorrow.

I don't see the point of playing 101 if stats can that easily be maneuvered. Even though you're playing the game for fun, the effort you put into it should be rewarded with an honest score. I'm glad I didn't put out the money and order 101 after my trial version ran out. You know how frustrated I get with the cheaters.

The thing is they are not cheating. In 101 it is possible to be top of a table without winning a single game. You just need to amass a high points total by playing a silly amount of games. The people below you could have 100% record and you a 0% one. I've never been able to see any logic in it.

Yesterday you saw, why all experts have claimed (?) the Spain team for the best in the world in the last 2 to 3 years. They devided (?) the room perfectly and you can only win against them, when you move a lot and very fast. That was that, what the Germans did so far, but not yesterday and that's why they lost.

Holland decided that they were going to try and kick Spain off the pitch. Spain were totally inflexible and tried to go through the middle of the Dutch defence every time, and the Dutch knew that!. A poor advert for football.

Flair appears to have been stifled by some managers in this World Cup. They just appear to want to play safe and hope for a boring draw so that the outcome can be decided by penalties. We used to see some dazzling free kicks every time it came around. Teams would insert one of their own players into the opposition's defensive wall and then step swiftly to the side as the ball tore through the gap where he had previously been.
FIFA should leave the ball alone. Having a new type of match ball for every World Cup is a joke. It's detracting from the game and skill is going out of the window.
I've never been a great fan of Cricket but at least it can be more entertaining than the rubbish we endured tonight.

Markus summed it all up in two words...."Money rules". The whole thing has been exposed as totally corrupt.
Britain, or more accurately, England is hosting the Olympics in 2012, whilst Scotland has the Commonwelth Games in 2014. I think England were being a bit greedy anyway in trying to get the World Cup too.
Qatar, pronounced catarrh, is a wonderful site for the World Cup. The 130 degrees is sure to suit everyone, as is the complete ban on alcohol. They have such pleasant and peaceful neighbours too. It's just a stones throw away from Iran,Iraq,Afghanistan and Somalia. I can't wait. World Cup Qatar........ sponsored by the Taliban perhaps.

You did hear right Markus. They are proposing to build air conditioned stadiums/stadia (both correct plurals). The problem will be that visitors and players are going to be subjected to huge differences in temperature. I hope Scotland don't qualify. We start to cook in temperatures above 70.

And i think they have to stock (?) up the number of players allowed from 22 to 33 to make sure, that they have always enough players for a game who are not lying in bed with the flue because of the huge differences in temperature. But that will be the chance for the USA to get world champion.

That makes it either Venezuela or Brazil. They are between Columbia and Guyana. I don't know where Guyana Ken is.

Even educated fleas do it

I hope Richard doesn't resort to doing it. Terrible thoughts come to mind.

I didn't know, that there is a PGS-version for birds, bees and educated fleas. Maybe also for Dobermans?
